Default Recommend OBD dongle and App for iPhone

Dear All,

Who is regularly using an iPhone wireless connected to a permanently installed OBD dongle in the XK? I have never before used an OBD dongle, but am considering now to get one, as I would like to be better informed about the XKs coolant temperatures (with the difficulties in the water pump etc. known).

Glad for any recommendation for dongle and iOS App!

Regards,
ter

Give the ELM327 a try. Cheap as chips on ebay or amazon. Then download the Torque app for I-Phone. It should give you all the real time monitoring your looking for. There are also quite a few APPs offered that work with the ELM 327.

Ter 11 - What do you drive? Include year and model, etc. in your signature and it will be there for us to see when you are asking for information specific to your vehicle.

I just bought this one:
Amazon Amazon

and use it with the "OBD Fusion" app. As I understand it, Bluetooth 4.0 is preferable to wifi (which most Apple compatible OBD dongles are) because it uses much less energy when left plugged in when the car's not running, and it doesn't take up your phone's wifi connection.

On NA models it is on the left next to the driver's kick panel.

Android Bluetooth OBD readers do not take up the Bluetooth phone connection. Both run simultaneously in my 13 vert.

To use a BT Dongle on iPhone, you would need one that has been “Made for iPhone”. They are expensive as that certification is expensive. This, many just use WiFi. DashCommand or an App that comes with your iPhone compatible work well.

That’s the one I have, and it seems to work quite well. FYI, I originally downloaded the OBD Fusion app to go with it but ultimately didn’t like the interface. I just installed Dash Command, and so far it seems much better.

Too bad you have to use an iphone. My OBD2 Bluetooth unit cost me $6 free shipping, and it came with the full versions of both Torque and Dash Command.

You really should consider upgrading.

Does anyone have an opinion on something like this:
Amazon Amazon
I am thinking about trying to utilize the ashtray space with a display unit. Any thoughts? Suggestions?

There are smaller units out there which won't be so intrusive. Some however do not have Imperial measurements. Gotta watch for that.

Yes I noticed that a lot of these things don't have imperial measurements, this says that it does
Amazon Amazon
And at only 82mm x 55mm x 55mm I'm thinking I could possibly make that work in ashtray area and be able to still close the ashtray door over it, but I need to take some measurements in car first...

I'd prefer something wireless myself and am actually working on modifying the wireless charging pad I put together before so that it's tilted up to make it easier to see the gauges in my OBD app. Is there anything the display unit can do that a phone app can't?

Simon I like what your doing there... That's what I have in mind... I don't think any of the display units do anything more or different than the app, I was just thinking about not having to tie up my phone.

Tying up the phone is actually a good thing for me since I'm less apt to look at texts, etc. but can still answer the phone hands-free.
