Was just a camera and cables for cost. Probably less than $20. The problem was getting hold of a modified SDD setup to change the Car Configuration File.
Looking back on it, I'm VERY happy that I did it the 'right' way and not add extra doodads which require input.
The SDD stuff cost like $225 for the DA Dongle (JLR approved "Mongoose Cable" option). I had an extra laptop and the software was a 'free' download.
Course, NOW I have a full-blown SDD setup for whatever I need it for.

 

Just running the wires through the interior and splicing into the harness, fits my definition of 'rigging'.
Then there is the doubt when the screen gremlins appear, if it was something you did during rigging.
Besides there are just a few rare instances that I actually look at the rearview camera on my other cars.
The rest of the time I dont want my screen to change every time I put the car in reverse.

 

That's sad. I guess opening both the fuel door AND the fuel cap must be MURDEROUS for you.

 

I know what you mean; do I really have that little confidence in my work, and ironically this is part of my occupation.
I admit It is emotional (so is phobia of having a phone in ashtray).
Its about having perfection. Sometimes a butcher just wants to enjoy a steak served to him.

 

There are at least two ways to get from Point A to Point B; the hard way, the easy way, and ways in between. Until this wireless, solar powered, quick DIY install, perfect fit in the ashtray/oem-look backup cam came to market, I was prepared to bite the bullet and pay a pro up to $1,000 to integrate a backup cam into my touchscreen like CeeJay did. That's far too complicated for me to do, but then along came the easy way and the rest is history. Sure, it's not quite the same, but it fits my needs perfectly.

With all the money I saved, I can buy those new Michelins! Right, Cee Jay?

 

 

Interesting as my ash tray socket on my 2012 turns off with the ignition.

 

Personally, I always unplug the unit and park it in the glove box. Just to be tidy. I have noticed, however, that when I would leave it plugged in, the screen was still on until I hit the double-lock, which I think shuts down power to the accessories (can someone confirm this?)

 

It stays on for 20-30 minutes, or until all the modules turn off.

 

When parked in my garage, I leave the display unit plugged into the cigarette lighter and when I exit the car and lock the doors the display shuts off. The cigarette lighter socket is switched and is off when convenience mode is off. Note that when you approach the car with the smartkey in your pocket it will activate convenience mode, turn on the cigarette lighter and the backup cam display in the ashtray before you pull the handle to open the door.

When parked outdoors, I always unplug the display unit and lock it in the glovebox. It looks like a cellphone and is an invitation to be stolen if left in plain sight.

 

If your car does that there is something wrong with it. It doesn't have a clue you are there until you pull the door handle or try and open the hatch.

 

 

You are right! I stand corrected. Nothing happened until I pulled the door handle. That caused the backup cam display and the touchscreen to light up.

I was under the impression that keeping the Smartkey too close to the car would activate convenience mode and run down the battery. There's a lot of advice on this Forum about that, so is it wrong?

 

Have you had a chance to use this? Wondering what you think of it as I am looking to try it out. Seems like a simple solution, especially being the convertible top is limited viewing. Hate to back into one of the other "toys" in the garage, haha.

Yes, that is wrong. The car doesn't look for ANYTHING until it is touched. Also, the widespread idea of keeping your key in a metal container while not in use so thieves cannot steal your 'frequency' and clone a key to steal the car is just about as Hooey as anything. The key can only be detected up to five feet away, so the 'thief' would need access to your key regardless, or at least know exactly where it is. It'd be easier and quicker to just steal the key.

 

Yep, crimes like stealing your key code is drastically on the decline...
Due to the fact that they just steal the car now.

 

You must be carrying your key fob in your shorts . My Lexus lights up when the key fob is within 6-10 feet.

 

 

That's too bad, was hoping it would be a cheap solution. Oh well, might have to find another way. The hunt continues...
