Default Change your e-diff fluid!

For the past 2 years I've owned the car, after cold starts, the first few tight turns would always result in a judder/vibration from the rear. I noticed a lot of the older XFRs were getting this and finding out their diffs went bad months later.

My car only juddered for a turn or two, and only at slow speeds. Nothing too awful, and I always babied it for the first few minutes of driving anyway. But I decided to service my e-diff last week and replace the fluid, simply because I thought it was the right thing to do, despite Jaguar's insistence of "lifetime fluid." The color of the old fluid was a very dark brown, and while the viscosity of the fluid looked okay, I could see a few speckles of metal here and there. Size wise, they were smaller than any speckles of glitter, but when I looked carefully, it was there.

It's made a huge difference in response, the shifts are smoother, and the power is transmitted to the wheels better. There were always some quirks I would occasionally notice from the rear end during shifts, and now that's all gone. Most importantly, the judder is gone too! No more noise from the diff.

My car has only 36K miles on it, it's a 2012. I bought it with 24K miles. I don't do donuts or crazy burnouts. I'll give it the beans every now and then, but I avoid hard launches and such. Next up is servicing the transmission fluid. OEM fluid is expensive, and the total cost is nearly $600 - which is mostly parts.

Also the diff will not overheat so quickly. If you drive these cars on a circuit, the diff can overheat after three or four hard laps. Change the fluid and it takes much longer for the warning to appear.

You can buy a service kit, pan, filter, and real ZF fluid on ebay for about $225. Most of the larger transmission shops will change the fluid for about $100 labor.

I've been noticing the same symptoms. Did you do it yourself? How many quarts does it take?

thanks

You can obtain the X150 Workshop Manual from Internet vendors if you intend to repair or service the vehicle yourself.

Below are the specifications for the Rear Drive Axle/Differential:

Since I don't know, I will ask a possibly stupid question here;
Does the E-Diff require a Friction Modifier? As I do not know what method the e-diff uses for lockup, I don't know the proper specs.

Not a stupid question by any means.

From an article by Wes Siler in 2009:

"Another first for Jaguar is the new Active Differential Control (ADC), the final stage of the supercharged V8 driveline. Designed to give improved traction and dynamic stability, the electronically controlled differential continuously adapts to both the driver's demands and the amount of grip available at each individual wheel."

"Operated by an internal electric motor and 'ball-and-ramp' mechanism, the differential contains a multiplate clutch which transmits or 'vectors' torque to the wheel with most grip and therefore maximises the car's traction. The multi-plate clutch assembly is designed to prevent excessive differential slip, but differs fundamentally from a conventional traction control system, which uses the brakes to counteract differential slip, after it has occurred."

The fluid specification M2C192A Synthetic is for fluid WITHOUT friction modifiers: https://www.fcsdchemicalsandlubrican...nsaxle%20Fluid

Well, there ya go. All I had to see was "multiplate clutch". I searched for just under an hour and couldn't find any info.
So, a Friction Modifier seems to be required.
I thank you for your information, Sir.

So why does the post's last sentence say WITHOUT friction modifier.

That is because the specification M2C192A synthetic 75W-140 gear oil does not have friction modifier(s). If the specification is WITH friction modifiers, include EST-M2C118-A, which is to be mixed in as an additive: https://www.fcsdchemicalsandlubrican...nsaxle%20Fluid

As always, it is best to refer to the vehicle Owner's Manual or Workshop Manual to check the specification by VIN.

Because that fluid doesn't have any.
I DID find this on a Fluid Spec page:
Ford M2C192-A plus M2C118-A
Synthetic hypoid gear oil with friction modifier.
Far as I know, having a friction modifier when it ISN'T required doesn't do bad things. The reverse is no-bueno. Since "Clutches", I'd assume a FM would be a good thing.
I REALLY don't want to burn up my E-Diff.
If I'm either missing something or flat-out Wrong, please tell me!

+100.
For anyone who's reading this thread and has the "shudder from the rear end when turning from a stop" (cutting left across traffic, etc.) here's my experience, from a previous post, for those who haven't read it (I was also saying nice things about my warranty, but you'll get the drift):

Default e diff noise

Hi

I also had the noise and vibration from the diff on tight left turns

Had the fluid changed and although better still got the noise sometimes, so put the SDD laptop on it and found no codes but that you can recalibrate the diff motor

Did this and now all good

2009 XKR 106000 miles

Now jus t got a knock from left hand front when making a slow tight right turn

Your thread was the reason why I decided to do the fluid change on mine. Fortunately, it seems like that's all it needed. Praying that the e-diff doesn't fail on me.
