I know one thing for sure, I will NEVER own a Black colored car.

No, this is not my car.

I understand your concern rich. But do the following and black will never look better:

1- Paint correction by a professional dealer.....
2- Front body wrap
3- a clearcoat protector that is more long term. I had 22PLE put on the car. The results!!

I am taking my Jag in for an oil change tomorrow. I plan on washing it BEFORE I take it to the dealer. Then I will put a piece of tape on the steering wheel that says "NO WASH!"

Frankly, the scratches on the "before" pics are not that bad.

I've seen much worse!

I'd also speak to the service advisor and INSIST they do not wash the car......

Another piece of A4 with "DO NOT WASH" in big bold letters on the passenger seat to be as safe as you can be.....lol

Default Great post

This has to be one of the best posts and accompanying referrals I have read so far. There is no doubt in my mind that it will prevent me from having a stroke or prevent me from going to jail by preventing my car from getting butchered

I read the link and can't believe a dealer is washing cars with basically a broom and wondering why cars are scratched. This should not be rocket science for dealers dealing with high end automobiles.

Its not only dealers but cheap detail chops as well. I've started bringing my own towels for wash and dry to the shop as I live in a highrise and don't have the ability to wash my own car.

Anyone have recommendations for an awesome detailed in San Diego?

Thanks for the heads up on the dealer wash.

I, too, live in a high-rise (okay, maybe a midrise). You can wash your car using Optimum No Rinse! With a little practice, it works great! I only need 4-5 gallons of water or so to do a really good wash.

Amazon.com: 32oz. Optimum No Rinse Wash & Shine: Automotive Amazon.com: 32oz. Optimum No Rinse Wash & Shine: Automotive

Also they have a new product that I have not tried that incorporates a wax into it...

Amazon.com: Optimum No Rinse Wash & Wax 32 oz: Automotive Amazon.com: Optimum No Rinse Wash & Wax 32 oz: Automotive

A lot of good professional detailers use these products.

Not sure if it helps but I noticed that the San Diego Jaguar Club are holding an event on 4/12 with 'The Detailing Pros' who operate out of North San Diego County:

Jaguar, San Diego Jaguar Club Upcoming Events

May be worth checking them out?

What would be the high/low price range one would expect to pay for a service on this caliber?

In my area, North Carolina expect to pay between $500-$600 for this level of detail. Not bad considering Chris @ Nth Degree Detailing spent 2 - 11 hour days and a 7 hour day on the car. That's 29 hours total.

I would find it very hard to believe that a detailer would only charge $20/hr for detailing... either he did not spend 29 hours on the detail or his business is about to go under!

Most detailers I've heard of charge more like $75-100/hr.

amcdonal86, he was at my home for 29 hours, and his business is booming, he's a perfectionist, and yes this took longer than he wanted, but its as close to perfect as you can get a 7 year old black car. His business is actually thriving and is training a new detailer to help him. Up until now he's done everything himself. funny how we quickly judge people we don't even know.

Thanks, that probably will be Mel Craig from the Detailing Pros. I took their detailing course a couple of years back. Great guy and tons of information on the right way to care for and detail your car. Lot's of fun!

I'm sure he's a nice young chap and he did a fantastic job, but I'm just trying to do the math on this. $20/hr? What is that? $40000-60000 a year in revenues? And that's if he's occupied full time, which most detailers are not. I follow Autopia forums and Autogeek forums very closely as well as at one point I was trying to get into the business.

I would love to know this guy's info because I would gladly drive down to North Carolina and pay him $20/hr to do my XKR and give me results like those!

The last detailer I used charged $100/hr and was training a second person, but was living and working out of his parents' house...

He probably charges by the service, not by the hour. You win some, you lose some, but customers like the consistency of pricing.

I was looking to have paint correction done on my Range Rover and was quoted about $1200 or more. He said they spend about 20+ hours polishing and buffing.
