Default Engine failure. What are my best options?

My 2010 XK coupe has about 65,000 miles (105,000 km) on the odometer. While driving in light traffic in downtown Atlanta, without any prior symptoms, the engine started sputtering and smoking very badly with almost total loss of power. I parked it in the first safe parking lot I could find, shut it off, and left it there overnight. Today the fluid levels are fine but the engine makes a very rough noise while trying to turn over and it will not start. Thanks to youtube I learned how to take apart my center console to put the car in neutral so that it could be towed home.

I have yet to do any real tear-down, but my instinct tells me this is likely an engine failure. I owe about $20,000 on my loan for this vehicle, and I have little appetite to invest another $10,000 to get it running again with a used engine of unknown history. What do you think my best options are at this point? Thanks in advance for your advice.

Honestly, you're taking a 10k dollar hit no matter what. I would get the car fixed because they don't sell for good money when you can't drive them.

I would 1st get the car to someone who can give you a clear diagnosis of what the problem is. At this point you are guessing and don't have any idea what the problem is.

Lack of oil or coolant kill engines instantaneously. If both are fine and there's no intermix, then perhaps you have an injector, pump or coil issue. sounds like you lost a fuel rail or a few coils wont spark. I mean these are shots in the dark, but youre looking at a worst case secenario, and thats what we tend to do in a panic. So... get it towed to a proper Jag mechanic and have it checked. Dont let them think that you think the engine is dead... 🙄

Any more specifics on "Smoking", and "Rough Noise"?

Black smoke, white smoke, gray smoke?

From where?

Metallic noise?

Misfire noise?

I had this scenario with my 2010 XKR twice and the advice to check to fuel injectors is sound. Once a single injector goes bad the computer will not function properly and all will stop working properly. If you had proper oil and coolant levels, I wouldn't jump to any conclusions until you have it diagnosed. Each time it happened to me I first noticed that the idle started to fluctuate, and within 30 seconds it was running so rough and so rich that it wasn't driveable. The repair was quick and I was able to get the car from my indie within 1 day. Don't worry yet!
You probably also saw lots of white smoke and smelled a heavy scent of unburnt fuel which is what happened in my case.

What Tberg said.
Last year I had what sounds like the same thing that you are experiencing. It was one fuel injector that caused the problem.

You may gather some insight from the thread I started...

If coolant is there, oil is there and it didn't overheat you have better than 50/50 chance that it could be fixed without engine swap.

What you owe on the car exceeds its value when fully functional, without running engine your car is worth in low 4 digits. Your least expensive choice right now is to repair it.

I'm amazed no one has suggested he read the OBD codes.

If it is fatal, it may be time to make sure your insurance is paid up to date, and then find out that the car is stolen and has "mysteriously" made its way into a lake or river. Fire is an option as well, but quite a bit more messy and possibly traceable.

Well not just that. This is the X150 forum. He needs to do a hard reset of the battery

This really sounds like a bad ignition coil/fuel related
I would check that first before thinking you have motor failure

As JonWat said in his Post #10, above, check the OBDII fault codes first. Otherwise, you're just wasting time and taking educated guesses that may be wrong and needlessly cost you money. Know your diagnostic limitations and repair abilities and when it makes sense to pay a pro.
