Exporting 2009 XKR from UK to USA - RESOLVED

I am moving to North America (Minnesota) from the UK and want to take (export) my 2009 5.0L XKR Convertible with me.

Very briefly: The relocation company states its not possible - this model does not appear on the "Approved Vehicles for Importation into the US List", only the 2005 XKR is listed, nothing has been added since Tata took over. One US import broker said I may need to allow the vehicle to be crash tested first ...really?! Another said I will need to get the vehicle converted which could be "eye wateringly expensive". Although when pressed no one seemed to know what work needs to be done to get the vehicle to conform.

The latest company we have contacted said a North American Certificate of Conformance (COC) is needed as it will state that the vehicle has Passenger Occupancy Detection System. It does have this feature, except Jaguar can only provide an EU COC (I already have a copy) which does not mention it, because it is not required in the EU (I believe). Jaguar technical support have offered to write an email that states that the vehicle has the PODS feature "if that helps". Waiting to see if this get this process any further forward. I am wondering if there are any emission or safety feature differences between EU and NA XKRs when they rolled of the production line in Castle Bromwich May 2009.

In the meantime any advice is welcome. Even if it means putting me out of my misery once and for all...or the details of a import/export broker who could help.

Seems it would be much easier to sell your X150 in the UK and then purchase a similar vehicle once you're in the US.

'Eye wateringly expensive' is good description of what it would take to 'convert' the vehicle to meet US regulations. Unless a vehicle is twenty-five or more years old, it becomes very difficult indeed.

The last thing you want to do is get it stuck in customs. You might be able to buy a newer model over here for the price you'd sell the 2009 in the UK.

I'm curious to see if anyone has a definitive answer for you.

Regardless of all the transportation costs alone, you could probably buy a replacement vehicle in the states for less than what you'd sell your car for over there.

Also, even though it'd be 'cool' to have a wrong-side drive over here, it is really quite a pain in the buttinski to actually DRIVE one. Your view of all sorts of things will be wrong. I did it for about a week (friend's Skyline) and it was MISERABLE in traffic.

Use this as a starter and search to see what differences would be for your country to US. https://www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.do...da10102012.pdf

Tim, is your 09 with the new pop-up gearbox or the old J gate?

Ask as you'd get a 11k max for the old style and £14k for the new back here in the UK, that equates to $13k= £17k USD using tourists rates

So will leave it to those on t'other side of the pond to advise what you can expect stateside for that type of money

Also ask what type of jag support there is in MN...all of these things are are import(ant)...hope you liked the pun!?

I had the opportunity to move stateside in 2002 when I married an American but chose not to :)

Its a pop up - a quick look on Auto trader and I am seeing GBP 20K-24K,
I had contacted Jaguar Minneapolis and they could support (service and repair) the car so they say.

Yes, the opportunity came up to move to the US and we thought we would go for it. Lets see where it goes.:-)

On reflection the XKR is a two ton curling stone in the Minnesotan winter and would have to be garaged.

MarkyUK 10-16-2018 01:15 PM

Apologies you're right I searched XK and not R :(

Appreciate though your a private seller and are never going to get as much as a dealer is selling for, simply as they have to offer a guarantee/warranty..if you sell to a trader expect the figures I quoted. Sports GT's get the best prices April-Aug and 4x4 Sept-Jan, so if you're going in Winter and have to appreciate that you will take a hit.

By way of comparison I picked up my facelifted 2014 XK Dynamic R with 40k on the clock this month for £32k from a dealer from whom I got a 12 month warranty, a new MOT, a full tank of fuel, a service and free delivery from 200 miles away, how many of these will you (be able) throw in for a median £22k? Also if anyone interested in the car knows your emigrating they will (justifiably) take the urine....I know I would!

It seriously makes sense to sell yours here and buy one over there..since you say you are moving and it's not for a short duration.

Welcome to the forum Tim,

I could understand wanting to take a vehicle that isn't available in the US but can see no advantages over the alternative of selling your RHD EU CoC XKR in the UK and buying a LHD US CoC XKR in the US. The importation will be a nightmare. If your intention is anything other than to keep it for the remainder of your life, you will be left with a vehicle which is either unsaleable or of very limited value.

We have had a few members who have done it the other way round importing a US specification Jaguar to one of the LH driving European countries and even a LHD vehicle to a LHD country has been a test of patience and endurance obtaining certification.

Have a lie down in a darkened room until the madness passes. :icon_lol:

If you do decide to go ahead, you have my best wishes for a successful outcome.

Graham

Keep it registered in the UK and just drive around UK plates in the States. Then sell the car somewhere in the Virgin islands where it's RHD...

dsd 10-16-2018 06:02 PM

The 5L came to the US as a 2010 model year car. You can get one for sub $30k. It will be cheaper by far to sell yours in the UK and buy one in the states.

If if you try and ship to US, you will be stuck in customs— your car won’t be released unless it’s converted.

best!

To be eligible to import your XKR from the UK to the USA, you must first join the International Masochists Society.

Tim_R_UK 10-17-2018 06:59 AM

Thank you all so much for the advice.

Interestingly my company had offered to pay to move it over, I had said something during negotiations to the effect of "its one thing bringing my wife over... its quite another being separated from my car..."

The decision will be either sell the UK model and buy an US model , or store... I had considered storing it for 5-7 years. Any thoughts on that? Is it going to become collectible? Although these questions change the focus of this thread somewhat.

MarkyUK 10-17-2018 07:22 AM

Don't think it will be collectable unless mint with virtually no miles on it. First and last 50 plus special editions (think Artisan and Dynamic R) are likely to be IMO

Storage always a tough one for that long, as you'd have to drain all of the fluids and have it on axle stands with the wheels removed. The car needs to be driven and it would be a waste for it to be laid up for any length of time.

mosesbotbol 10-17-2018 08:44 AM

The XKR-S is only long term collector XK series car IMO.

Peet01 10-17-2018 08:50 AM

Agreed. Although very special, these cars have very limited collectability and it will probably never become a collectible classic with someone forking out a lot of money for one in future.

I tend to agree with some of the comments above:

- Don't store - vehicles tend to develop a lot of issues if stored away for that amount of time. The car will not gain any value - it will just lose value and you will sit with it. Convert the car into money now.
- Driving a RHD in a LHD market is a b!tch. Just imagine - overtaking becomes an issue. Just collecting a parking ticket at the mall is almost impossible. Looking smart in a RHD will quickly fade and you will sit with endless frustrations!

Sell your car in the UK - you will find a similar car for less money in the US.

No, it's missing two crucial letters :)
