Default How wide are our cars?

....like, to the inch? Mirrors unfolded?
Looking at a place that has a narrow garage door. I feel like I'm gonna need, at a minimum, 3 additional inches (that's what she said) on each side of the car to feel OK backing it in.
The owner said it's EXACTLY 100 inches wide. I'm good, yeah?

Car and Driver says 74.5" without mirrors. Given that you have 100" to work with, you should be OK.

This is from the 2010 brochure.

As per the US DOT, any vehicle wider than 80 inches must have clearance lights on the roof, front and rear. I don't think mirrors are included in that limit though. As per pictures above, our car's mirrors don't extend past the body.

California is about 1.7 times bigger than United Kingdom so we are used to a more compact lifestyle.

My garage is 20 ft x 10 ft with an 96 inch door opening. Absolutely no problem driving in either forwards or backwards without folding the mirrors BUT be aware the parking sensors do activate going through narrow entrances.

Thanks all. Cee Jay, I think the mirrors must extend past the body because those stats above show a greater width with the mirrors extended.

Possibly/probably, as I do try to get the mirror clear when I reverse out of my own garage, but that attached picture sure doesn't look like it. The picture must be with Mirrors Retracted.

Here's a different illustration confirming it:

Still, can't be wider than 79.9 inches for USDOT regs.

That would mean you could get a car just shy of 8 feet wide into the garage! AFAIK, no car ever made has been that wide! You are good to go!

The Rolls Royce Seraph is 85.4 inches wide, so with 3 inches clear each side, you'd be OK with that car too

Don't even think of buying a GMC SIERRA CLASSIC 3500 truck though. They come in at 96.5 inches!

The F150's trailer mirrors weigh in at a whopping 105.2" in max trailer configuration. At that size you should be able to see the curvature of the earth.
I have the "standard" ones which are only 83" folded. and 97.3" when in use.

Now THAT's wide!
I'll just say that, using the car as a daily driver in a crowded city, I just am constantly reminded how wide these cars are.

Not sure how small a garage you are looking at, but I have a double car garage with 2-single car doors and back my XKR into it regularly without issue.
