Jaguar & Land Rover dubbed worst new car in USA

Unfortunate review done on Jag and LandRover here:
https://www.msn.com/en-us/autos/news...FYP?li=BBnb7Kz

Not sure what all these issues are but come to think about it I did see a brand new XF at the dealer that was in the shop for misfires. Car was 2019 and had less than 5000 miles on it.

Looks like they are paying the price now for years of sourcing poor quality parts.

Ranchero50 06-24-2019 03:28 PM

And so many wanted to dis Ford's ownership as a bad idea...

80sRule 06-24-2019 03:37 PM

Well, reliability was nice while it lasted.

Mufc 06-24-2019 04:04 PM

I had a loaner XF while my XK was in to replace HP Fuel pumps. XF developed a bad misfire and a check engine light. Less than 3k on the car. Dealer said, I never saw that before ! Not today anyway.

shemp 06-24-2019 05:14 PM

It makes you wonder how long they can survive with all this bad news (this, sales down, Billion $ losses...)

I am watching Mad Men on Netflix and on the episode last night, they landed the Jaguar account. The challenge for them was how to sell this beautiful car that is always breaking down. One of the characters tried to commit suicide by carbon monoxide using an XKE he received as a gift from his wife and it wouldn't start!!! I couldn't help but laugh at that...

So sad.

I'm assuming 07 through 09 MY's we're under Ford QC control, did 5.0 l years suffer after Ford sold? I'm aware of the common water pump issues but I guess what I'm asking is did Tata maintain the same quality control for the later-model XK as Ford did for the early model xk150?

flyc2c 06-24-2019 07:14 PM

Not surprised.

The XK, F-Type, XJ, XF, etc, were "Ford" products. The XE, F-Pace, E-Pace, i-Pace, new XF, etc are mostly Tata products now.

Actually, the F-Type falls well out of Ford ownership, although while under Ford there were a couple possible F-Type concepts that were scrapped;

The brand has gone down hill since Ford's touch has gone away. Tata hasn't been able to carry the torch. My XE was delivered with a faulty seat buckle. A basic safety feature that both the manufacturer failed check for on the way out. A basic safety feature that the dealer failed to check for when they are charging the customer for "Dealer Prep". Shouldn't dealer prep include making the car is safe to drive? This list goes on...

JLR NA is responsive and seems to care for the customer once there is an issue, but I'd rather not have the issue and not need to talk to corporate. The local dealership seems to have a revolving door of service writers or managers. None of them are really intimate with the marques history and makes an in-passionate experience for those who love and breathe Jaguar. The standalone Jaguar dealership were more passionate about Jaguar.

I was sarcastic earlier, but often get my cars called Fords. They aren't Fords and the number of parts bin parts on the XKs and XJs under Fords ownership is near nil; there's more Mercedes parts in them (at least that I've seen).

Ford was the best thing to ever happen to Jaguar. They brought an influx of cash, higher quality suppliers, and guidance to move into a modern era. I have experience with United States, Indian, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese and Japanese manufacturing facilities. I'd rank India dead last. The worst part is that I worked with some truly outstanding and brilliant people in India but the management was beyond idiotic and would refocus constantly; basically cutting off the productive people at the knees. In addition to that, the attitude towards quality is straight up bad there. BTW - This isn't a race thing, it's a location culture thing. I'm talking about in that country. I'm curious if the broken Indian Management culture is trickling down.

and India thinks China as being lowest quality. Irony.

Ford was the worst thing that happened to Jaguar.
For the glaring truth that Ford failed with every high end brand its ever purchased.
Compare that with what VW did with Bentley, Bugatti, and Lamborghini.

Tata is much richer than Ford, or any automaker outside Germany, where the auto industry really lives hand to mouth.
But the premise of this thread is basically fake news, why, because the entire auto industry is in a meltdown, worse than 2007. JLR is actually doing waaay better than many of them.

Can you name a popular electric car from Ford? Jaguar is outselling Tesla in some countries!!
Can you name a halo / flagship brand-building SUV from Ford, since SUV is 75% of the sales now.

JLR has both highly successful electric car and the best name in the SUV market. They are poised to do well after the dust settles.

shemp 06-25-2019 09:41 AM

I think it's safe to say we all hope you are correct Q&C. Unfortunately, the stigma of Jaguar unreliability is alive and well and I think people/reporters have fun keeping it alive. I hear it and see it in almost every conversation with non Jaguar folk.

Cee Jay 06-25-2019 10:08 AM

?????
Ford vastly improved the VEHICLES, while TATA sort of revived the COMPANY. Huge difference there.....

Queen and Country 06-25-2019 10:11 AM

Shemp, you dont have to outrun the bear, you just have to outrun your buddy. I think this is why they went all in on electric.
The unreliability, filth and expense of gasoline cars in general is now folded into that conversation by those folks. JLR seems to be wanting to distance itself from both.

I cant believe how rapidly Jaguar got a mainstream electric car on the market and went straight to the top with it.

Queen and Country 06-25-2019 10:28 AM

Ford has amazing manufacturing!!! and they did bring that to JLR.
However they also have a problem that has sunk many ships, including several of theirs, and it negates manufacturing efficiency....the lack of creativity.

Just look at the cars Ford made for itself during the time that it owned JLR, mostly garbage. But you look at one of the more successful Fords, the Focus, they had to go outside Ford to create that.

You can buy manufacturing, as you see Tata doing now with vastly superior vehicles and successful vehicles, but you cannot buy creative culture, which Ford is suffering from now.

Consider the inverse to see the problem: Imagine if Cadillac has bought JLR, what a beautiful marriage that would have been on so many levels.

jahummer 06-25-2019 10:34 AM

But the majority of the parts that made the X152 F-type were X150 XK parts, looks at switch packs, suspension, drive train, electrics, etc.

Jaguar and Maserati are mostly dealerships with no long term history with the marque. The passion is not there like at Porsche dealer. Everyone at the Porsche dealers lives Porsche. Not so at JLR.
