Jaguar XK not starting...

Hi, I have a beautiful Jaguar XK. Today though, she didn't start and came up with a parking brake error. She wouldn't turn over, the pedal went really stiff and nothing except that error.

I called the AA out and they changed the battery, so the battery is brand new.

She started but then, 5 minutes later, same problem.

So, messed with the fuses at the front near side, swapped a couple of relays over and, she started. I thought that was the fix but, 5 minutes after the AA chap went, again she wouldn't start.

Called the AA out again and they cleaned the battery terminals and she started again. However, when the second AA chap went, again she wouldn't start.

I'm now waiting for my third AA van of the day and this time I'm driving her straight to the local Jaguar specialist.

So, new battery, fixed but then no fix. Fiddled with fuses and relays, fixed but then no fix. Cleaned battery terminals, fixed but then no fix.

I really don't like intermittent faults so any help or advice would be much appreciated.

I would have it towed. If it stalls while driving to the repair shop it could be in a bad location.

Hi, once she's started, she runs perfectly. So, I've just got to get her started again, and then I'll drive her to the local independent, which is only a few miles away...

I bought a new battery earlier this year, it was faulty and had to be replaced after 3 weeks.

First things are to check the battery with a multi-meter off/at idle and under full load

Then test the alternator in the same way, it could be you've a faulty one of either, or perhaps both.

Welcome to the forum jackson999,

This is a known fault on early European specification XK/XKR. After a battery disconnect they would be difficult to start or not start at all. There is a software update for this but it may not have been applied if the vehicle has been serviced outside the dealer network.

Hi all, got this fixed.

It was the main fuse board that had developed a fault. Got this replaced by the local Jaguar independent and have had no other issues since.

On a plus point, the repair was covered by the AA Breakdown Repair Warranty, which costs about £50 a year ish for AA customers. They covered the whole bill of £500, I just had to pay the £35 excess. That policy also paid for a replacement battery. Well worth considering.

That’s awesome Jackson
I wonder if AAA offers that here in the United States?

If the vehicle is not driven for long periods exceeding a week or more, consider installing a battery maintainer to keep the battery topped up. They can usually be purchased for about £50. Use the search function to see various methods of installation.

Press the START button before you put your foot on the brake pedal to start your car. I know that the Owners Handbook says otherwise, but trust me - your X150 will start faster, with just a tap on the brake pedal.

Never sit in the car with your foot on the brake pedal and the ignition off. Inadvertently pumping the brake pedal will cause a "hard pedal" and make it difficult to start. If that happens, you have to stand on that pedal with both feet and depress it as hard as you can while pressing the START button.

Main fuse board? Can anyone elaborate on this? Location of it? This is a bit confusing, with very few details, and felt like a drop for AA in the UK. Idk... something doesn’t add up

Hi, didn't see that there had been a question on this thread.

For future reference, this wasn't a drop for the AA, it was a legitimate fault with a repair.

The repair bill said the fault was traced to the fusebox with power going in but no output. Renewed the fusebox, cleared codes and tested.

The cost of the repair was £489 and the code for the replacement fusebox is: C2P11757

I hope this helps someone.
