Default Lazy man's power steering flush

Pulled a quart of Dexron III from the power steering reservoir... emptied the resevoir, did a bunch of lock to lock turns, and repeated 2 or 3 more times. I'll drive it a bit and pull another quart. Old fluid is pretty dirty, but still has visible red tint.

I did this exact same thing about two months ago. Course I do it every year or two.

I did that last year to try to fix the low rev steering shutter. I think it helped a little but it's still there when turning at very low speeds. I ended up changing the PS fluid in the reservoir 4 times over 4 weeks. the last batch came out pretty clean.

Canadacat, I used a syringe with a clear fuel line connected to it. It's cleaner than the turkey baster IMO.

I use a long clear tube and my mouth. I lost my baster long ago and the tube was handy. Two sucks and the reservoir is empty. Ghetto, I know, but super fast and easy.

The full flush procedure in the service manual works great. I bought 3 litres of Dex 3, then pumped it through the system as the manual described. Complete change in one pass, not a drop spilled.

Takes a half hour to set things up, 10 min to pump 2.5 L through (mostly changing the intake bottles), and 10 min to reattach the reservoir and fill with the remaining .5 L

Fluid was distinctly brown after 80K miles.

I didn't wanna mess with jacking up my car so I did the Reservoir flush four times today with a small transfer pump I bought. Sucked the reservoir dry, added new fluid and then racked the steering to each side for five times with the car on. Then rinsed and repeated it three more times.

Trying to figure out all the different fluids I figured I would just use the factory Pentosin CHF 202 since it wasn't a 100% flush. AutoZone carries it in case anyone is interested.

I do this on my motorhome every few years with the power steering, plus I do the transmission... I suck out a few quarts of tranny fluid and add new back in. It doesn't get very many miles so the filter should still be good and it's a pain to pull the pan so I don't wanna do that.

A very late reply indeed - but CHF 202 is NOT the right stuff to use and likely to damage the steering. I have no idea why but the handbook does state 202, but the service manual states Dextron III which in 2025 has been improved by IIIG and IIIH. These fluids are not interchangeable and definitely not mixable.

In the UK at least it's easy - Dextron III or updated equivalent is red and CHF 11S or 202 is green.
