I was just looking at youtube and came across this unit call "scangauge II " which is a small unit that has all of the info I would need. It does have a wire connection to your OBDII connector but it is small enough to stick above the steering wheel. Here is a demo with it sitting above the steering wheel. As I mentioned all I am looking for is water temp and voltage which this would do.

Just a quick update on this, I am still yet to get the car! I abandoned the purchase when the garage couldn't obtain the service book. Weeks later the owner (who was having his house renovated) found the book, everything checks out against the MOT records. The RAC have inspected it. If all goes well I collect next week.
Few things on the go including putting up a new garage mean I won't get onto this until spring next year, but I will post up when I do.

 

If you are prepared to accept a non-traditional display but in a traditional circular form factor, this might be worth considering:

You're using Norton, that's the caution.

Looks like a viable alternative. 2.063" x .826" thick is pretty compact. It would almost work down by the useless ash tray or do something custom on top of the steering column.

Actually on edit, it doesn't tell you what it's displaying while it's displaying it, derp...

 

I use Norton and went right through to the website with no issues.

 

Mine blocked it.

 

I've been thinking about this issue as well.

For me i'd like to have some proper "analogue" gauges, the only problem is where to mount the damn things...

Dunno - Norton being hyperactive, mayhap? Anyway, it looks like this:



The little green blip is the 'analogue' part of the dial - 24 green LEDs around the edge that emulate a needle. Comes with a black surround as well.

No idea if it'a any good, but worth mentioning.

What about a head-up display that includes water temp?

for less than 50 quid, connects via the ODB2 port & is easily removed when you sell the car.

I got confused by the similarity of 2 forums and ended up posting on the other one!!
I've now had the car 3 years, and I barely use it. Being modern British Leyland I seem to spend more time working on it than driving it :-)

I would still like some gauges, but now that I'm familiar with the car I'm struggling to start messing with the looks etc.
I did see some displays that went on the console, I must research these again as this would be a good way to go - I seem to remember the parts though were no longer available.

Did anyone ever do anything with either real gauges or something on the display console? I have seen something in the ashtray, on the mobile phone and the heater vent, none of those options really appeal. Interested to know if anyone did anything else?

 

This is what I had in mind. It could be mounted in a cluster on the top of the dash possibly, but would require some skill to not make it look like a bodge. I'm lucky I'm friends with a very good ex Jaguar trimmer, so anything is possible. Having forgotten all about the idea this thread has got me thinking again.

I need to tackle the basics first - got an actuator to change having sorted the brakes and the aircon during lockdown in the UK (oh and just replaced the Pedestrian Sensors we have to have over here). Maybe once I've sorted the fluid change in the Supercharger I might tackle this as a winter job. Prepare for some more questions nearer the time. Things I will need to learn:

1. Where is my feed for these gauges?
2. How can I source small Jaguar gauges as shown in the picture?
If I could make a good mounting frame I just need to leather clad it to make it look like a dashboard extension - my friend still does a lot of re-work for Jaguar, so getting the right leather shouldn't be a problem.

This or convert the car to manual gearbox first...decisions, decisions :-)

 

Cambo put his company logo on those gauges and that was a few years ago. I've never seen them for sale or installed anywhere. I'm not sure if they're photoshopped or he created them.

I think the only logical place for those types of gauges is the A pillar and personally, no matter how you cover it, it will look tacky (to me). I've been unable to find a spot that I would be willing to place gauges that look factory made so I'm sticking with this setup and the parts are available for gauge, just not touchscreen but you can change the looks as you see fit:



Beyond that, Cambo's company has a setup that installs android auto on to the touchscreen and it is touchscreen functional. With Android auto you can add the virtual gauges like torque pro. If you have and iPhone however, there are no OBD II dashboard tools available with CarPlay and likely never will be so be advised.

 

But to address your other question, assuming you find the analog gauges you like and have determined a sufficient mounting location, Volts is daily obvious. Coolant temp would probably require a temp sensor fit in line with the current one possibly (every analog gauge seems to have different set ups so it would be hard to give you a definitive answer on this until you have the gauges identified). You may also tap a hole to fit a temp sensor.
Same with boost. You'd want to tap something in the intake manifold.
Digital gauges that look like analog would be a better option. You can pull the data from ODB port.

And as I re-read the entire thread, you were not to keen on my setup so apologies for reposting that part.

 

So is this a CAMBO picture or your own set up - this is the kind of thing that now I know the car would be most suitable - my concern is tackying it up with physical gauges?

Basically they will make you custom gauges, with your choice of colour, scale, pointer, font, logo, etc...

Nothing further came of this from my side.

Adding gauges via an Android system (what Sean did) is a different thing altogether....
