Off topic V8

I'm just sittin here watchin the end of the Daytona 500 and I'm still amazed that they get 8700 rpm out of those pushrod 16V engines. Engineering

The Porsche 911 has always been proof that, with enough time and money, you can make a bad design work pretty well. Given the budgets of the NASCAR teams, the limitations of a pushrod design can be overcome. However, it's worth remembering that F1 V8s redlined at 20,000 rpm until they were artificially restricted.

Yep that too was amazing and the howl was awesome. I usually go to the Ferrari Challenge cup races over here and even at 10K rpm it's a hoot.

Loudest thing I ever heard was being at the F1 race in 2013 before the V6 switch when they were the NA V8's... wow...what a noise!!

Ngarara 02-22-2015 05:57 PM

I've never heard anything like being behind the grid of an F1 race when the lights go red - 20 or so small-capacity V8s at insane RPM ready to pull the pin. Mental, completely mental. Unfortunately, the current turbo V6 systems just don't have the same scream.

My Formula F1000 redline was set at 12,500 for the rev limiter, but could push 13,500 and whines like you couldn't believe. The Formula F1000 is one awesome racing machine.

The NASCAR racing machines are really something special also.

I can't remember the the red line for the V12, and I'll admit I'm biased but I love the sound of the V12 LeMans engines and even the 6L that ended up in the XJR15
I wonder if a V12 would fit in a XKR ???

andys-GR 02-23-2015 08:36 AM

sorry ! had to share this :)

The V12 has a lower tone exhaust note which I liked when I had my XJS. The above video sounds great but the sound of the trans-axle gears sounds great to me and drowns out the engine sound. I love a lot of the sounds and am partial to the high revving (hornets nest) sounds of the F1 V8's . I guess the only sound I don't like is the 4 banger rice burners with the fart can exhausts.

Its too bad the last minute changes got rid of the syncromesh box, 7liter 700bhp V12 along with AC etc :(

I well remember the sound of the TWR XJ-S V12 - I saw them several times, including their last ever race at Pukekohe in NZ in 1987. Here's Tom himself a couple of years before, taking the big cat to pole at Bathurst - the 2-wheel cornering at 1:12 as he comes over the top of the mountain is just awesome:

And that sound...

You may find this outing at Monza with the mid-1990s 412 T2 3.0 litre V12 one to enjoy. Be certain you have speakers turned on...

The hairs on the back of my neck...

Mind you, it does sound like a bag of bolts on the overrun.

Closed throttle with short exhaust pipes can have that sound. Now if Michael were driving...

Here is another one for you to enjoy: the 1970 512M at Monza. The gearbox must be shifted slowly until warm with second gear being avoided on acceleration. If you are not familiar with Ferrari, the name is for 5 litri, 12 cilindri and 'M' is Modificata, or modified in English. This particular car has the more aerodynamic rear bodywork, thus 'Modified'.

I especially enjoy the scene at 2.47. So different from Formula Uno, but I hope you enjoy...

I see your Fezza and raise you an XJR12:

+1 Great and something to listen to while housebound due to snow and cold. Summer is on its way

Ngarara 02-24-2015 05:56 PM

:icon_hijack: Avast there, ye lubbers!

Damn that XJR12 sounds good! I`d make that my ring tone but people would look at me side ways. Jaguar needs to get back into racing. Too bad the C-X75 never made it to production. I`m afraid the V12 sounds of the past are gone giving way for the hybrid technology.
