overheating
 

I have searched a lot of posts but can't find any that directly relate to my problem so I'm hoping someone might be able to help. I have a 07 xk 4.2 with 90k miles,took it on a test drive from the used car lot fell in love with it exactly what I wanted! I put 2 grand down and took the car for the weekend as the rest of the money was being paid the following monday and they were ok with that.Problem was the car overheated with just a little over a 100 miles on it,the hose under intake manifold let go.They towed it back to their shop and said the engine was overheated to bad to be used again so they then installed a 60k used engine and I was ok with that but the exact same thing happened with a little over 100 miles again!! In both cases the coolant resivor fills with oil. Both cases the engine runs perfect no noise's at all.Could the fan not be coming on? I can't think of anything connecting the two engines. only the radiator and fan as I asked and paid extra for new hoses,belt,etc while the engine was out. I did stop at the shop and see they had old engine out and after I received the car the second time I could see from underneath a clean block with those temp buttons that melt if the engine goes beyond a certain temp.I am sure I'm looking at a damaged engine,I had it towed to a different shop and they will look at it on monday. Any ideas guys? How does the oil get into coolant? Head gasket? Intake? Front cover? I'm a licencened tech but don't have any experience on this engine. This second time I don't know if it overheated as no triangle light came on just noticed a puddle under car and investigated.

What a terrible misfortune. These engines, 4.2 or 5.0 are very reliable by all accounts.

As a tech you probably know that trying to diagnose something like this over the web is next to impossible. Given the fact that two different engines overheated, the cause must be in the cooling system, I would think.

Did you get a new thermostat with the second engine? If you did it would at least eliminate that as a possibility. Is the radiator plugged?

IMO, the presence of oil in the cooler reservoir may not indicate a cause but, a consequence. When aluminum engines overheat severally they will warp or even crack the block and possibly open a path for the oil to enter into the circulating coolant.

Wish I could help you with more suggestion but, I am stumped by the symptoms. Good luck with the investigation and let us know the results. If I could in your place, I would back out of the deal as fast as I could, at this point.

I agree with AXR6. Since it is a major failure and you just purchased the car, I would concentrate on trying to cancel the deal. It is too much of a headache so early on. Good luck and let us know how you do.

Don't screw/mess around with a car that has these problems. There are way to many of these 2007 Jag XK/XKR's for sale and I wouldn't want to buy a car then immediately have to address engine problems. Whether you fell in love with this car, doesn't matter. Don't make it an impulse item.

Collect your $2000 back and MOVE ON.

even when they wouldn't pay the 2000 back, move on because it will be always a headache and you'll never drive to enjoy it. You'll always have second thoughts about the car even when it fixed!!!
