Putting back the rear spoiler on a 2008 XK
Hi guys,
Yesterday I drove the cat out of the garage with the trunk door open, and hit the tip of the door at the tip of the garage entrance :( The hist was quite mild, and damage seems to be limited to : 1. The rear spoiler got dislocated 2. The rear spoiler red-light's tip broke. 3. A dent at the back side of the trunk door (See pics) My question is : After I recover and finish mourning... How hard it is to get new clips and properly attach the rear-spoiler back into place ? Is that something you have done and can testify to ? I am thinking of getting a new lamp, clips and put it back in place for a short-term solution. Then slowly get a few quotes on fixing the dent from a few shops. What do you think ? Thank you Mourning me https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...2f09f01ba4.jpg This clip was broken, I am thinking of getting new clips and attach the spoiler on my own. How doable is it ? https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...994b06fa94.jpg This clip was broken, I am thinking of getting new clips and attach the spoiler on my own. Mickey 21,
My condolences. I can only imagine what you said to yourself. Have you considered making a collision claim against your auto insurance? Although the damage appears at first glance to be minor, I suspect that the cost of a quality professional repair will be well over $1000. You may want to get a detailed estimate before trying to fix it yourself. Note that you have to timely notify your insurance company - see your policy; otherwise, they can deny coverage. Stuart |
Thanks Stuart. That's a good point, there is no harm in reporting in case i change my mind, I will do that.
I do have a high deductible, so assume this will not be worth it, but thats another option, you are right.

If you decide to get a repair estimate, let us know the details.

Update : I paid for the 1 hour access to the Workshop Manuals, found the instructions to remove the liftgate trims (upper and lower) and was able to access the spoiler bolts and clips.
I re-attached the spoiler using the bolts (took pictures of the broken clips to find replacements and re-do the work later using new clips) and glued the tip of the rear-light. The bolts hold the spoiler quite well - good enough for now. The light works and the cosmetics are back to what they used to be (with the exception of the small dent which I will professionally fix separately ) So after 1 hour and $8 and I can now drive the Jag to the shop, calmly collect offers for the dent fix and look for the clips. Mission accomplished :) If anyone reaches this thread and needs more details , feel free to PM me. |
Mickey21,
Well done! Nothing better than the feeling of satisfaction from fixing it yourself and saving big bucks! Stuart |
