Yeah it sounds basically the same method as Shadow Chrome. First a black undercoat and then the "chrome" is actually a bit translucent, so different thickness of finish changes the colour.

This is the reason that the Shadow Chrome wheels are painted by robots in the factory, so that they are always the same colour. None of the wheel repair companies local to me will do Shadow Chrome, because painting by hand results in varying colours, and complaints...

Which sucks, because I need to get the Shadow Chrome Selenas on my Portfolio re-done...

If you're thinking about getting "real " chrome wheels, read Post #8 in this thread from the XJ Forum:

Gloss black would be my recommendation. Of course, I'm a little biased.

Well, the vendor ran into a snafu so I won't be getting my wheels until Monday.

In the meantime, as conversations in this thread have touched on black chrome and PVD

Well yeah Stuart but they come with their own purdy carrying case, which most likely has a combination lock, designed to explode on unauthorized entry. It may also be delivered to your door by courier handcuffed to his wrist.

Tires are a big part of the equation, as I reweighed my Carelia (with tire) when I got my Senta back, and my Carelia rear is still 63.6 lbs, while the Senta (with Conti DWS-06) is 61.4 lbs.

Not just tires, but also weight of pressurized air when ready to mount.

I got my wheels back yesterday. They added a little more hyper-silver than I wanted so the wheels are darker than I'd hoped (close to Stuart's.) That said, they are beautiful and the wife loves them.

One slight hiccup. They punctured the side wall of one of my tires at the bead when remounting it, or rather their machine did.
They have new one on order and should be here Saturday. He's giving me a discount for the inconvenience.
The tires are 2 years old and have less than 5,000 miles so I'm ok with that.

The service with this gentleman has been stellar. He picked up the wheels, dismounts, powder coated, remount and balance. Pictures forthcoming when the tire is on and the sun comes out, assuming no snow as I wouldn't be able to get back into the garage.

Any update?

As much as I love the better performance of my aftermarket wheels, my Carrelia's looked fantastic on the car even in need of a refinish. I'm undecided on what to do with them though, gloss black, various silvers, or PVD Chrome.

Yes. They got the tire in and got the wheel back to me an hour ago. Too dark for pics. I will take some tomorrow and post and then rumor has it, the sun will be out this coming weekend so I'll get some in the sunlight as well.

Again, darker than what I expected. It's very cloudy in these photos. I fact the street lights just went out.

They look black to me from some angles and gray from others. They'll lighten up in the sunlight obviously

I did check on PVD Chrome with two vendors here in Minneapolis. Both said they send them to a shop in Chicago as neither had the equipment on hand in town. They were of the opinion that no one in town could do it locally.

That wasn't a factor for me as I like what I picked and what I ended up with. I just thought I'd pass the info along as I imagine shipping will come into play for many of us.

It looks very bold.

You might want change to black caliper covers and perhaps black lug nuts.
