Default Removal and exchange of gear shift module

Does anyone have any experience or instructions on how to remove the gear shift module in the central floor console? When I bought the car (a 2007 coupe) it had several patches of black missing from the top plate which looked hideous so I looked for a replacement and have managed to find a complete shifter with a near perfect black plate. I would now like to change the whole unit over as it looks well nigh impossible to remove the plate without complete disassembly of the module. The workshop manual refers to more complete disassembly of the console than may be necessary so has anyone some advice for me before I break something!? For example do I need to remove the side panels of the console and is any adjustment necessary to the gearbox cable when reassembling?
Cheers,
Mike

IIRC, the side panels just pull off, but check the service manual to be sure. Use a marker to mark the adjustment linkage parts (nut, threads, etc), so you can line everything back up again when reinstalling. Did that when I removed my console, and no additional adjustment was needed after reinstalling.

Steve, thanks for your thoughts. I had looked at that but preferred the black as I am trying to keep the car as original as I reasonably can. Also black matches the rest of the interior although stainless isn't so far off. Thanks to both (so far) of you.

Pretty easy to R and R Mike,

1. Remove the shift area wood trim.
2. Remove screws that are attached to the console side covers
3. Remove both console side covers
4. From the left side disconnect single electrical connector
5. From the right side take a screwdriver and pry off the cable attachment
6. Remove four screws that hold down the shift unit and out she comes.

I have never had to readjust anything with the cable attachment as of yet. Should be about an hour job.

Thank you Ken for the most detailed instruction. Out of interest do you know if it is necessary to reprogram the replacement shifter module to the car? The one I have is from a breaker's yard.

I can't definitively say no to that question but I can tell you that I have replaced two of them without having to do anything and with no trouble codes afterwards.

Default Selector removal

hi I have got to the stage where I need to remove the cable from the linkage, can I just use a normal Screwdriver? To prise it off? Also the electrical connector seems to disappear downwards, have you any idea where it plugs in? And when I plug it back in again will it need resetting? Thanks

The electrical connector is on the left side towards the rear about 6 inches or so. It has to be accessed by removing the side cover. The linkage is just simply popped off with simple tools and the unit does not require any reprogramming.
