From what I've read I don't think it'll work cue to the cable actuation on the early cars versus full electronic shifting on the newer ones.

Be cheaper trading towards a 2010+. I like the rotary dial much better than the j gate.

Relatively straightforward.
Requires removal of license plate.
And placing on appropriate vehicle.

You forget about paying the necessary taxes. The government always takes the first bite.

I don't know about YOU, but EVERY vehicle I buy from a private party costs "$500." That's about $35 in sales taxes. The registration one must pay regardless.

I could live with that, they eat the lion's share.

A 65 mustang for instance, changed hands 15 times in 40 years. $30k in taxes collected. Thats more than Ford Mo co made, and they had to produce something tangible.

Your lucky to be able to do that. Here in Texas you pay taxes on sales price or presumptive valve, whichever is greater... I guess they have something similar to kelly black book that they use to determine the presumptive value. But they are going to get you one way or the other on private sale.

That doesn't work here in Taxas. When you transfer the title from out of state, you pay the tax. AGAIN. I was blown away when I moved here from NJ. No state income tax here but they git ya every other way they can.....

Sorry OP, no input on changing the gear selector.

Taxes may re-arrange behavior by where they are placed; but the spending that your state does needs to be paid for somewhere.

I'm so confused, was this a discussion of taxes or shifters?

The communications network was changed with the 2010+ models so basically you'd have to transplant the guts of a 2010 into your car which would most certainly exceed the cost of just buying a 2010 or newer...

Here in NY USA sales taxes on the purchase of a used car is based on "Book Value". At 8 1/2% I paid $2200. in sales tax, at the DMV when the car was registered. The only exception to the rule is if the car is a gift from a family member, as in parent to child.

About the Shifter. The reason for the j shifter in the earlier models is that when the lever is moved, the mechanical force of that movement actually moves the gears inside the transmission. the dial shifter on the newer cars is a recent/invention improvement, but I doubt that an older car's transmission could be converted.

The original XF also used the ZF 6HP26 but had a rotary selector...

I am sure it would be a nightmare to do but using an XF as a donor may be more achievable than using a later XK.

From the XF Technical Guide:

The ZF 6HP26 transmission is an electronically controlled six speed unit and is utilized in all current Jaguar models: XF, XJ and XK.

The transmission has a fully electronic transmission selector with no Bowden cable connection to the transmission.

The transmission selections are made using the JaguarDrive electronic rotary selector, which rises from the floor console once the engine is running. Rotation of the electronic transmission selector to any of the 5 positions is sensed by the TCM via the HS CAN bus. The TCM then reacts according to the selected position.

Movement of the rotary selector to any of the 5 positions is sensed by Hall effect sensor at the base of the selector.

This positional change is then transmitted on the HS CAN bus to the TCM. The signal is also transmitted by LIN bus as a back-up signal.
