Satnav international maps...

Hi all,
I've done a search but haven't turned up any specific info on this.

As I mentioned in the other thread, I'm based in Japan and I'm importing a GT from the UK.

Obviously I'm going to have to do SOMETHING with the nav, as it won't work here.

IDEALLY I'd like to keep the horrible old standard nav (I'm funny like that) and just run Japanese maps. Do you suppose just putting in a Japanese map disc will work, or will there be a system restriction? Even if it works, I wonder if it will support English....?

If the answer is "no" then of course the question of course becomes "can I stick another head unit in there?". Looks like a very odd sized hole, and how would it even work, what with the face buttons and such. Are there any recommended units?

Cheers all!

The navigation system in the XK uses DVD's, and there is a different navigation DVD drive listed in the parts catalogue for the Japanese cars. I suspect that the maps provider for Japan market is not the same one as the rest of the world markets, so a Japanese map disc probably won't work in a Rest of World navigation drive. I have seen this same issue with other models.

The touchscreen and the audio unit (where the CD slot is below the screen) have pretty much nothing to do with the navigation system, it's all done by the DVD drive in the boot. The screen is just a screen in this context.

So I suspect you will need to get one of those Japan-spec DVD drives, in order to use the Japanese map DVD's.

Good news is that the DVD drive is the same one used in the XF, so they should be relatively easy to find, if you don't want to buy a new one as a spare part from Jaguar.

As for English or Japanese on the screen, the touchscreen language is separate to the maps language. I just had a look at my XKR and even after changing the display language to Japanese, the maps and map menus were still in English. I guess if you have a Japanese map disc, everything will show in Japanese, even if you have the touchscreen lanaguage set in English.

The other issue you'll face is the VICS system for the road tolls, usually for Japanese-spec Jags this is built in from the factory, but it'll be missing from your UK-spec car. I believe you can get standalone VICS units, so it might not be necessary to retrofit the factory system in that case.

Brilliant! That's exactly the sort of info I was after.
OK, guess I'm finding a Japanese drive...or if I don't want Japanese language, then an aftermarket option. Know of any screens that fit/work? There shouldn't in theory be any problem with importing an English unit (from Pioneer or whoever) and having it work in Japan?

Yep, the local VICs system is standalone here in most cars, you stick them on the windscreen usually. My BMW has it integrated into the rearview mirror though!

There's no chance to change/remove the touchscreen in these cars, too much is controlled by them, like the climate control and some of the security features.

The map discs to suit the XK (i mean the ones other than the "Japanese" ones) are the exact same discs as used in;

Jaguar XF up to 2011
Land Rover Freelander 2 up to 2012
Land Rover Discovery 3 up to 2009, Range Rover Sport to 2009
Aston Martin V8 Vantage
And a heap of different Volvo models.

The nav system in these cars is known as "MMM2" if that helps you with your searches...

Of course, I hadn't thought of that! Another reason I hate touch screen cars...!
Right. So my options are:
English system with no maps and use my phone (how safe) or;
Install Japanese unit (I highly doubt the dealer would do it for me) and have maps and EVERYTHING in Japanese. YAY!

Thanks for the info anyway...!

Cambo 10-15-2017 10:45 PM

No if you install a Japanese Nav DVD drive then the maps will be in Japanese, but everything else in the touchscreen (audio, phone, climate, other menus, etc) can be in English.

Dylan Bigg 10-15-2017 10:53 PM

Ah ok, got it!
I might be able to deal with that...!

Two thoughts: Navteq makes the DVD discs for the American market. Try them directly or why not just go to a Jaguar dealer in Tokyo, Osaka or where ever you are in Japan?

Dylan Bigg 10-17-2017 01:52 AM

Doing that at the moment. Speaking to Jag Tokyo to see if they want to involved in the import clearance. I'll ask-but as pointed out above, the unit itself is different, so likely all they can offer is to sell me a new nav unit...

We have the opposite issue in New Zealand because many of our cars get converted from Japanese spec to UK/Australian or European spec after they have been imported. I wonder whether it would be worth contacting some of the Jaguar dealers or specialists here to see if they would be interested in doing a straight unit swap.

I have converted a number of my Japanese imports Jag and non-Jag) and all but one (X350) needed a new nav unit. The X350 just needed a firmare update.

I have heard that one of the local nav specialists actually changes some chips in the XF units to convert them.

3 Attachment(s)
I had a closer look at mine, the display language and the navigation language are two separate settings.

Attachment 204484
This is the language setting for the touchscreen.

Then when you select navigation, there is the option in there to choose a language.

Attachment 204485

With the Australian map disc, you get a selection of European languages, but no Japanese, even though Japanese is an option for the touchscreen language.m

Attachment 204486

So I guess it's a question of which languages are on the Japanese map disc...

Hello,

My name is Cédric, from Paris (France). I recently buy a Jaguar XKR (MY2008) in Japan and I would like to know what parts need to be changed to receive the European FM radio. If I changed only this part: 7G9N-18C815-TA, does it work?
Or I need to change the entire installation (screen included??)

Thanks a lot for your help, have a very nice weekend,

Cédric

Hello,
Nice to meet you, my name is Cédric from Paris, France.
I recently bought a Jaguar XKR Cab 2008 in Japan.
And I wonder what need to be changed in order to receive European FM radio.
Do you know if I have to change the screen or can I just change the radio module, but then what part number is it?
It seems to be the same system as the XF.
Thanks a lot for your help,
Have a nice day,
Cédric

@u102768 :-)

I think you will find that the radio already supports European frequencies but you need to get a dealer or someone with their diagnostic tools to change the car config, not hardware e.g. look at the first item on this screen shot from my ex Japanese 2010 XKR.
