Default Service Required Message

Being a newbie Jag owner, concerned about message that appeared today when I started my 2011 XKR convert. SERVICE REQUIRED Message appeared in yellow/amber and then went away and replaced by clock. I know the oil was last changed in May 2017 when it had a tick over 20,000 miles. I bought the car shortly after that and car now has 21,000-plus miles.

Any thoughts from experienced owners. Thanks, Marty

The reset procedure is as follows:

1. Press and hold the rear fog lamp switch (before the ignition is on).
2. Press the start button without applying the foot brake (do not start the engine)
3. Release the rear fog lamp switch (1sec)
4. Press and hold the trip computer cycle switch (within 1sec).
5. Press and hold the rear fog lamp switch. (within 1sec)
6. Continue to hold the trip computer and rear fog lamp switches.
7. The message center should display "resetting service mode" and then "service mode reset"
8. Release the trip computer and the fog lamp switches and turn the ignition off.

Now, when you do this, it must be in a nice, even pace to work well. Pretty much on a one-second cadence. Also, it is helpful to practice these steps a few times until a good rhythm is achieved, then do it for real. Seriously.

Default it thinks you need service

I believe the internal clock thinks and it telling you that it been a year and time to service your car.

You can do that and have it cleared when the dealer does it. Or search for "service required" here and you'll find the instructions on how to clear it with a series of skill testing button pushes...

I expect the same thing soon as mine was serviced and cleared in June of 2017

Aw yeah. The Service Message appears due to mileage or time, whichever occurs first. I'll bet ya that nearly 100% of Kwik-e-lube type places have no idea about this.

The message also popped on for me when I did my own oil change. The reset procedure worked for me.

I'm confused. Step 2 says "do not start the engine", but step 8 says to turn the ignition off. Is there a step missing?

Edit: Never mind. I mistook "ignition" for implying that the motor was running. My bad.

You forgot step 9. Lift right cheek and play "God Save the Queen" while following steps 1-8

The message also gets set any time the battery is disconnected and then reconnected on the 5.0L models.

For the British version, would that be "lift the left cheek"?

I have a question for you guys, along the same line as this conversion... I did the reset procedure appox 9,850k miles ago at last oil change and it hasn't been a year. Why would my service required message be popping back up already? I am planning on changing oil at 10k mile intervals but I don't think I should be getting this message yet or would it be for something else?

"approx" is pretty dang close to 10k, I think you're safe.

You have to do it to a one-second rhythm, I usually practice it three-four times before I actually try it.

SSM71850 infers that the procedure has changed from the 2014MY on all models (XK X150 14MY from VIN B52041).

This is the process for the 2014 on F-Type, XJ and XF petrol models so see if it works on yours and report back:

1. Set the ignition to the ON position.
2. Open the hood.
3. Open the drivers door.
NOTE: A service resetting message will appear on the instrument cluster.
4.Fully depress both the accelerator and brake pedals and hold for 10 seconds.
5. Set the ignition to the OFF position.
6. Set the ignition to the ON position and check the message has been cleared.
7. If the message remains, repeat the process.

But why Am I getting message at even 10K miles since last resetting? Isn't it suppose to be at 15K miles?

Dunno. I'd assume the ECU knows you're not far from the 12 month period and it's giving you a heads-up. Me, I get nowhere NEAR any 15k miles per year, so that's right-out.

Its not based solely on mileage or time, that would be same as a sticker reminding you when to change the oil.
Its based on an algorithm. (start-stop vs hyw is one I am aware) the computer takes all that into consideration.
Another one is air temperature.
But most people fall under the simple rule of x-miles/x-time.
Some manufacturers have abandoned these algos and others claim to be more clever.
