Skis in a XK Coupe or a roof rack for a box?
 

Thinking about replacing my Xk8 and XJR with a XK Coupe but from my understanding they never had a ski pass thru or a folding rear seat. Haven't started looking but from some pictures it looks like there is an opening above the seat but below the glass in the cargo area? Would it be possible to put up to 4 pairs of skis in it? Currently we use a widow mounted rack on the XK8 but that isn't a great solution as it hangs on the glass and only holds a 2 pairs plus they are subject to weather, salt etc and no way to lock. Anybody come up with a reasonable rack that fits and could hold a rocket ski box?

How long are your skis? On a coupe you can dang near put them in the back and remove the package 'cover' to allow them into the passenger compartment. I'd also think mounting a roof style rack to the hatch would work well enough.

Is it fair to assume that the 4 pairs of skis are for 2 people. Also most likely need to share the rear seats for boots and other accessories. Maybe someone here who ski and has a coupe can either let you know max length and how much stuff you can get in. Way back when I had my XKE coupe we had a rack that mounted on the hatch door and it held up to 4 sets but don't know if they have that type of set up for today's XK.

That is what I was thinking. Nothing over 185cm or so. There would be enough room for them to fit and not be angled too high that they would contact the ceiling? There never seems to be a used coupe forsale close enough to me at a dealer that I can go have a look. Can't put anything on the hatch as you couldn't put a box on it plus it would make for a tough time getting at the bags in the back. It is nice having a box for ease of transport, not getting snow inside etc but I haven't seen a xk with a rack on it and no one seems to offer somethng that looks like it would work (some suction cup things but that isn't gonna hold down a box).

Well sometimes the 4 skis are for 1 person. My daughter races which I've determined to be more expensive then buying her a car and sending her to the track. :) I really don't want to deal with having skis exposed to weather salt and prying hands, if outside I want a rack that would hold a box and you can't mouht a box angled into the wind like that and expect it to stay. :)

OK , with a little creativity you could be the one to invent a box mount roof rack for XK coupes.
Note to Ranch do you think this would be to difficult to fab up.

185 cm is @ 6', about the width of a GT3 wing. :)

On a more serious note, I don't think you'll get too many pairs of skis inside a coupe. There's @ 3' of 'trunk' room under the hatch and the vanity panel behind the seat is @ 12" wide. If you notch that and remove the rear seat belts there would be a 12" width that would work. I guess it depends on where the bindings are and how big they are.

Finally a shot of my 6' tape on the hatch for reference. Sadly there's no lip on the window opening for a roof rack to bite into. Maybe trust the suction cup style mounts?

Have you looked at any Range Rovers?

I was thinking about removing the vanity panel for the winter. That wouldn't give me enough room for the bindings with a pad over the rear belts to keep everything tidy and in place. No interest in a range rover. They are horrible to drive. If I wanted to drive an overweight mammoth horribly handling boring vehicle I would simply drive my wife's xf which I will need to whenever I need to tow anything as hitches and aluminum unibody aren't exactly compatable. :icon_razz:

No need to fab up anything. Just suction cup it to ur hatch and you’re good to go.

As I said that isn't a viable option for race skis and east coast salted roads.

If you don't mind skiing alone then the good news is you can get at least one pair of 163's in a 2010 XKR :)

My 12 year old has 163cm skis as her rec. skis but I don't think it would be prudent to give her the car keys:)

A little confusing to me as we had been skiing for 40 years and strapped the ski's on exposed car carriers. Either roof or trunk mount and never had a problem with salt damage.. Living in NY we would travel throughout NY , VT. , Ma to various areas and never had a problem. If needed you can get binding covers but other then that if you want total coverage then you'll need to buy a van or SUV. Then there is this.

I know nothing about skis or their transport, however, perhaps you can do a hitch and use a hitch accessory? Certainly works for bikes.

I think the aluminum unibody and a steel hitch are a no go for stress reasons plus it would put skis in a very bad location for salt spray. When your daughter's race budget exceeds that of the average weekend racer it becomes a no go for not taking care of your skis and wax. A rocket box or inside are about the only options. Have been using a window mounted rack on the XK8 but it lacks traction control and snows so it doesn't go out when weather is wet, snowy or poor. Don't have the need for a sedan 99% of the time so am hoping for a solution with the 150 that I can live with and drop the number of cats in the litter box.

Can ya mount a box on to the seasucker rack? You would have to mount the seasucker a bit closer to the A pillar in order to get it to be a bit more level.

I assume you realize that the aluminum skin on the XK will take a beating from the salt . Also if you need to be concerned about traction you would need to be looking for an XKR as it has the E-differential as opposed to the open diff of the XK. Then again if I were looking for a ski transporter I would consider an AWD vehicle . I don't think you'll find the ability to transport 4 pairs of ski's along with boots and acc. in an XK.

Looks far too short for adult skis and to get it longer I would never trust a suction cup to hold a big plastic sale sticking foward of the front mount far enough to have any hope of back access.
