small black tube in boot, what is it for?
 

just looking at a few things on my 07 xkr today, removed the cover panels in the boot just to see what the layout is. Located battery, connections good. To my left hand side there is a small black pipe , it runs under the flat part of the panel when on, it seems to dissapear down through the car body, behind the wheel arch, it is connected to nothing with a 90degree plastic bend. It's about 2 feet long, and thickness of a pencil ,is it a breather pipe for somthing, or ment to be connected to something.:icon_werd::icon

It's the battery vent pipe; needed to vent the battery because it is enclosed in the truck....................correct battery will have a place to connect too.

thanks for that, battery has the jag stamp on, so presume it's standard. What am i'm looking to connect the pipe to, can't see anything, is it on top of battery.

There are two holes near the top of the battery on both sides. One hole should accommodate the vent pipe and the other hole should be plugged to prevent fumes exiting the battery.

Thanks for that, got it and pushed it in, other side is blocked as you said. Checked the battery voltage and is reading 11.65, was driven today, but parked up for a few hours now. Got a charger and connected it and have it on a slow charge, still connected to car is this ok. If i replace the battery will codes be needed when fitted or is it just connect terminals and a everthing works, window settings maybe

11.65 VDC is rather low for a battery, particularly if it was driven recently more than just a handful of miles. In commonly used charts that indicates that only 20 percent charge left in the battery. You want to see a healthy battery voltage up to about 12.6 Volts after driving and then sitting for a few hours.

Yes, there is nothing wrong with charging the battery while connected in the car. Just make sure you place the charger negative lead on an exposed chassis part, instead on the negative battery post.

Read your Owner's Handbook, which says to use the remote pos/neg terminals in the trunk (boot). Search this forum -"battery charge for long lay ups" - for details. I'd post the link but I'm writing this from my smartphone and am unable to do so.

Actually, that is only really relevant to the 5.0 models, which have the battery monitor connected to the -ve terminal - if you connect the charger direct to the -ve terminal, you bypass the monitor, so it can't 'see' that you're charging the battery. Powerhouse has an '07 4.2, so it's not really an issue for him.

Interestingly, the 4.2 manual says you should not charge the battery in the vehicle - I assume they're worried about high-powered chargers pumping excess amps where they didn't oughta go, or maybe it's hydrogen build up in a confined space that worries them. However, a lot of us have used a conditioner or trickle charger on a connected battery, and no-one seems to have had any ill effects.

I' ve had a smart trickle charger connected to battery posts ('07 4,2) for years; only way to go........don't need it on my wife's XK8..........
Wal Mart has good price batteries but not in Ireland?
