I really do see what he is saying. Lately I have found my vintage truck more fun to drive than my sports cars. Smooth sports cars in traffic is like having something raging in your trousers that you can never use.

How many times have we opened the throttle up on each and every gear? I doubt often.

OMG, is that leather dash already starting to bubble?

Does building it yourself bring the hefty pricetag back from 2.25MILLION! USD? Jeremy indeed said the most beautiful thing he ever saw.. but also that at the 2.25M USD, it was also one of the most expensive things.. that obviously did not make it their website

They are now only 1 million, with an additional 250k for the coupe version. Pocket change.

Its Not 2 million, its 500,000 pounds.
More crucially, its just a well rebuilt e-type, hundreds of people have done that on far smaller budgets.

Camaros sell for that when they go through the inefficiency of a custom builder.

Those are turnkey prices. You are paying for your own lack of resourcefulness.
9/10ths less if you know what you are doing.

point however is that nothing is gratifying like a classic. They have made cars too smooth, not unlike winecoolers

well building your own starts with around 100k for an etype, and then you need to modernize the hell out of it.. like new shocks, engine upgrades, etc etc.. still a pretty hefty pricetag for a car that does not even have a central media console and I cannot fit in it

Center media console- lol. In an e-type.
You may as well have a sink in the back to colour hair.

Sorry for the continuing "thread hi-jack", but if you were craving for the Eagle Speedster "look", would it not be much easier to "reverse engineer" the thought process? (Don't start with an old car and make it modern.)
Start with a modern X150 and "re-skin" the exterior bits (and add any other retro features you may desire). The final result would be a modern and very reliable chasis and drive-train with the looks of an "antique" (pdo) car. It would be a whole lot less expensive to complete and the final result would offer everything a modern car does, without the old-car problems, and be tailored to the exact specs of the new owner.

It's fairly difficult to "reskin" a large car which is also a unibody and make it smaller. Heck, not "fairly difficult", more like nearly impossible. Sure, you could make it LARGER no problem, but who would want larger???

The issue is that modern cars are designed for safety. The only way to get a small car with a engine bay large enough for a inline six is to start with an old unsafe car.

The objective is to get that feel of spirited driving within allowable speed limits and ever-growing traffic. The problem with our high hp engines is that one is either in low unenjoyable rpms or they are in a much lower gear and foot off the gas pedal.

There is a sense of effortless premature climax, zero to sixty and you only changed gears twice. With older cars designed prior to Nuremberg dictating how cars handled, going around corners in the city felt like a rally course.

I thought the eagle was based on the XKR? Or was that another e-type lookalike?

Forget that, it might have been the Lyonheart http://blog.caranddriver.com/jaguar-...ech-growler-e/

If you reskin an xkr, you still get a car that drives like a Rolls.
Its the driving feel that Clarkson went soft in the knees about.

I will take two Lyonhearts one a coupe and the other a vert. I think they are really a thing of beauty. And I bet their handling is akin to or better than the XKR.

I dont think the handling even comes close to our cars, nor does the speed. And yet they prove that the thrill and exhilaration of driving a machine in speed restricted traffic is something other than that.

One thing is for certain, we are being sold a myth of top speed, 0-100mph, going around corners at 60mph, none of which we can legally or regularly enjoyed. A classic is constantly being driving to the performance envelope it was designed for.

The Toyota model 86 and Miata have proven that driver enjoyment is still alive and well. That's the supposed knock on the upcoming McLaren that is is so good and so fast but lacks "emotion, drama, driver engagement", etc. Someone even compared it to the GT-R. Most people could value paper numbers and stats far more than driver enjoyment, just go drive a Lexus today they are totally numb feeling. Would love to see a company go backwards and concentrate on lighter weight and less gadgetry sort of like what Lotus did for a bit

This world turns and depends on the incredible human ability to be fooled into believing they need something they dont.

In my lifetime I will spend more on my lawn than it takes to own a Ferrari. Best yet it derives no benefit whatsoever to anyone- not even for the fauna.

You can see from this tread alone, true value is the privilege of a very few. think of it as the universe's IQ test.

Did you see how many thought the Eagle speedster was $2million, or otherwise unattainable- here is one for $40,000. Even better, you can own it for few years for free. Its for sale right now, bid ends in 6 days. $40k should do it.
