Tinting a convertible's windows?

I'm curious, does this look good? Im torn on whether this is a good idea or not. Any pics or thoughts? Thanks, steve

I tinted both of my XK's, the silver one that was totaled and the replacement white car. Tinting in Florida is more a requirement for me than aesthetics, but since I have always tinted every car I have grown to like the look. Keep in mind that I always go with the legal limit, I am not going for the super dark limo tint like I am a rock star hiding from the masses.

Here are pic's of both 'verts with tint:

About tinting the quarter windows.... unless you pay the extra to have the glass removed and tinted, places usually cheese-out and cut the film short of the weatherstripping.
HINT:
Get Steve's Remote Control Top Controller with the Window Option. That makes getting the quarter windows tinted MUCH easier, and it turns out a better job.

tampamark 04-01-2017 11:02 AM

I disagree, my quarter windows look great. There is a spot under the convertible top weather stripping that is not tinted it can't been seen with the top up, and it can't be seen with the top down. The only time it can be seen is for the 3 seconds that the windows go up or down.

It would only be seen by the viewing public with the top down and the quarter windows up which can only happen if you have the remote top module installed. So the takeaway is this, if you don't have the JagWrangler's Remote Convertible Top Controller Kit installed and don't intend on installing then that is irrelevant!

Cee Jay 04-01-2017 11:47 AM

..... and then when you DO get the Remote top, the tint on the quarter windows will look ridiculous.

Yup so thats what i was wondering...how does it look with the windows up when the top is down? I'll do that to keep the wind down oftentimes...does it look weird?

If you are inside the car does it really matter? :icon_naughty:

It'll look odd but I don't think it'll look any more out of place vs. regular windows that have some tint ingrained. I never, ever ran with the windows up on my '69 Torino GT vert, even when it was down around 40`f. Wind pressure never bothered me.

With the top down and the side windows up, it looks better to have the rear quarters up too (so you need Steve's controller to do that). Avoids that chopped off look that you get with the quarters down (and it lessens the wind a bit on the highway).

P.S. Make sure to get a wind deflector, if you don't have one.

I got my windows tinted. Love it. I went with a light tint on the side (you notice it, but not much), and a slightly darker tint in the rear window. So my rear is probably as dark as Tampamark's photos of his white car, and my sides are a little lighter.
My guy did a terrific job and the rear quarter windows match the sides and look great. I have a black car and I'd say the tinting feels "right," the car definitely looks better with it and not pimped-out at all.
My advice: PAY EXTRA to get a Ceramic tint. I used 3M Crystaline, but there are others out there. Absolutely worth the extra $. The heat reduction is noticeable and makes a big difference.

PK4144 - Who did your window tinting?

No, it does not look weird. It looks the same as if you had non-tinted windows that are up, only darker . If it does look strange to some of the people who cares? This is not a question that ever occurred to me.

Well, that is just a matter of opinion. When the Wife is in the car she always wants the front windows up, I think it looks perfectly fine without the quarters up. Also the wind reduction is satisfactory for her.

Yes, every car I ever owned had the Ceramic tint with extra heat reduction, it really makes a big difference.

I went to a place called Window Tints Hollywood, partly because I work on the Paramount lot and could walk to and from the shop-- but they are excellent and I highly recommend them. They also have a Glendale shop. The first time they did my 2011 the diver's side tint started peeling up just a little from the bottom-- the immediately replaced both the driver and passenger window tint (just to be on the safe side) for free, same day. When I got my 2010 I had them do the exact same tint job on it and it still looks brand new.

The thing about the Crystaline is, when you're stuck on the 405 in the summer, not moving, and the sun's low-angle and blasting right at you from the side.... it's a game changer.

Sean W 04-02-2017 03:58 PM

I think tinted windows are fine if you need them (hot climate). They look fine to me, but I have no need to do it myself. No issue with the look though if that's the question.

On the coupe it seems the rear quarter window has to be removed to get it perfect, from a previous post it seems to just come off when you loosen a 10mm bolt, anyone know any step by step process for this,

You just described my exact nightmare of a commute between Santa Monica and Porter Ranch. Your advice may just change my life.
