Default tires

2007 XK

Whoever had the XK before me put the same size rims on all 4. I hate it that's it's not staggered but can't do much about it right now. I have to get new tires and right now there are 255 35 20 on it. I've done just about everything on cars as far as fixing them goes but I honestly know nothing about tires. For the best ride what size tired should I get? I don't care about performance. My wife drives this car and I would say it probably gets driven like a mini van more than a sports car.

Thank you in advance!

Continental DW's are hard to beat for life and comfort.

Check the placard posted in your car for the correct size. It is usually either under the arm-rest console lid or stuck on the door jam inside the driver's side door. It will usually list the Front and Rear sizes for a few different size rims (ie 18", 19", 20").
Ride comfort is another story altogether, and will always be very subject and produce many disagreements between various people.
If you want a more supple ride (and less sporty driving), I would suggest the Sailun Atrezzo Z4+AS as a reasonably priced option. If you want a firmer/harsher ride and more aggressive driving performance then the Nitto Motivo are recommended, albeit at a much higher cost.

Are the replacement wheels Jaguar? To help give you some advice on tire size, it would be beneficial to have a wheel part number.

Hate to give you bad advice based on the tire that's on there as there's a possibility it's not correct for the rim.

So if not a Jag wheel with part number, please list the manufacturer and their part number (usually stamped on the inside of the wheel if you don't have the receipt from the previous owner.)

The only difference is mine are chrome plated. I'm wondering if now is a good time to look for bigger rear rims since I have to buy new tires anyway. The smaller rims have always bugged me because they don't fill out the wheel well at all on the rears.

OK thanks so this is a Jag wheel. Pegasus

I don't have many details on this wheel. It appears to have been offered in 08, 09. You won't find a 20" recommendation on the placard for an 07.

The front is 20X8.5 with 49 offset

The matching rears are part C2P9302 which are 20X9.5 with a 26 offset. It might be hard to find those rears in Chrome if you want to keep the fronts.

The tire size you have are correct for the front of an 08/09 20" wheel. In your case, the rears as well. 255/35ZR/20

If you went with the correct rear width wheel, you'd want 285/30ZR/20.

It sounds like your wife is built for comfort so if you can't find the rear wheels in Chrome and you want to replace all, consider the Carelia 19" wheels

Carelia 10-Spoke 19x8.5 (Front) 245/40XR19
Carelia 10-Spoke 19x9.5 (Rear) 275/35XR19

A bigger sidewall will mean a softer ride, so stepping down to a 19" wheel will accomplish that and the 9.5" rear wheel will fill out the well a bit better.

You only asked about tire size. For type of tire, I suggest you run a query in the forum. You'll find an intense passion for the topic and a deep hatred of it by some but, you'll be able to discern what tire you want based on summer, all season, traction, speed rating etc.

You really should buy a set of OEM jaguar XK wheels and start from there. A lot of debate on 19" or 20", but you don't have the factory wheels with offsets and all that; the rest doesn't matter.

I agree.

I removed the OEM Tires and went with the Continental Extreme DWS tire and never had any complaints. You can buy a complete set of 20's for under $1000 mounted and balanced.

There is a difference between DW's and DWS's. For some reason people seem to confuse the two in threads. I might be the only active forum user with the DW, I think everyone else with continental tires has the DWS.

I believe the DW has been discontinued and is now the "extreme contact sport" or some sort.

I will be using the Continental Extreme Contact Sport when my DW's I have now reach the point I choose to retire them.

+1 on Tervuren's comment.
If you go Continental, you'll want the Extreme Contact 06, which is typically a DWS (Dry/Wet/Snow) tire -- the "06" is the newer version of the tire that Tervuren references. I got a flat on a cross-country trip recently (thankfully in the metro DC area) and after about 20 calls, the ONLY place that had one in my size in stock was a Jaguar dealership (for what it's worth, I'd point out that their price was competitive). It was in the Fairfax, VA area. They said that the Extreme Contact 06 was the tire they recommended for the XK's when owners are ready for a replacement set.
I love 'em, btw.

What I have has been updated with minor changes in the tread design and is now known as the Extreme Contact Sport. This replaced the DW. The splitting the outer tread block got significantly narrower in this new version compared to what I have now.

The current name for the version of what most forum users that use Continental tires is as of right now the ExtremeContact DWS 06.

I have not seen anyone else using the DW I have, so I have to be careful to ensure the distinction when I give my feed back, since I do not use the DWS. This is confusing when I referring to these tires in the plural forms.

+1 on the Continental Extreme Contact DWS 06. I've have them on my 2013 XJ 5.0 SC with 20" wheels for over a year and have been very pleased. Quiet, comfortable ride with no issues. A great value. I'll put them on my XKR when the time comes.

well they are OEM wheels, just not the set for his car and his ask was

"For the best ride what size tire should I get? I don't care about performance. My wife drives this car and I would say it probably gets driven like a mini van more than a sports car. "

I don't know what the 2007 tire size is, but for my 2012 it is 245 width on the front and 275 on the rear. You have a square setup at 255 all the way around, maybe the previous owner wanted to be able to rotate front to rear.

I am sure that your normal setup should be wider than 255 in the rear, that contributes to the issue you mention of not filling out the wheel well. I guess the question is whether it has 9.5" rim width on the rear or if they went with the same size as the front, the 8.5" rim width. The total rim width will dictate how wide you can go on the tire.

I'm not going to get into the tire discussion. Your signature doesn't say what your location is, but there is a member selling 4 mint Carellas. He posted shortly after you posted your inquiry. Unfortunately he doesn't list the size(s). I had Carellas on my previous XKs and thought they looked great. If it were me I would get touch with the seller and see if you can make a deal.

Oops they may not fit they are from a 2011 and yours is a 2007. If you want to do a deal you will have to make sure they will fit the 4.2L model. Good luck

I think I'm going to spend some time looking for new rear rims and if I can't find any then I'll look for all 4. If I'm replacing tires it's perfect timing. I'm going to check into the Carellas.

Thank you for all of the advice. I live in Texas and we don't take the car out when the weather is bad(snow). That doesn't happen often so it mainly sees very good road conditions.

Is 35 the biggest I can go or is there room for 40? 35 doesn't have much height on the tire and from my limited understanding that's where the comfort comes from or is that wrong?

There are several threads dealing with tires and sizes. Some of the threads deal with wheel offsets, tire sizes and rubbing issues. You can use the search box at the upper right corner and find some or all of these threads and you may find your answer there.
