TSB JTB00395NAS1 -Transmission "Clonk"

Has anyone had their transmission make a "clonk" noise when shifting into park? I see there is a TSB for it - excerpt is posted below.
Bulletin: JTB00395NAS1
Component: 103100 power train:automatic transmission:control module (tcm, pcm) Summary:"situation: on vehicles fitted with the 5.0l naturally aspirated
v8 engine only, a 'clonk' noise may be heard when selecting park (p).
cause: this may be caused by a transmission control module (tcm) software issue."
Mine makes the clonk noise. Has anyone had this TSB done?

If I get a Topix subscription are the updates available so that I could do it myself (with the SDD)?

thanks

I had and intermittent "clonk" on my 12 NA. It was never solved because, as is typical, it would not clonk on demand. so the dealer never experienced it. I also have it on my 13 XKR. Next time it goes in, I'm going to have them take a look at it.

davchr 06-25-2017 06:23 PM

Let me know what they say. Mine is intermittent as well. The TSB says it only affects normally aspirated cars.

Mine won't be going for a few weeks. I will try to remember to let you.

Ralphwg, did you ever get this worked out?
My '12 has a "thunk" when or more accurately right after putting the transmission in Park. This seems to happen only when hot and is not affected by moving to Neutral first, so it's not something that occurs when moving from a gear to P.

shemp 07-08-2019 03:19 PM

Mine has done it about 3 times in 3 years. I haven't had it looked at.

I still get it occasionally. The dealer has not been able to replicate it. It happened a few days ago for the first time in several weeks.

Add me to this crowd as well. I've simply attributed it to particular conditions each time. If anyone finds a solution though, I'd like to know.

How does one advertise a part on this site....I just bought a 1997 xk8 with a blown engine and a rebuilt tranny with 20k miles on the rebuild. I find it hard to believe that someone paid $7200 to rebuild the tranny but that's what the receipt says. I'd like to sell it to help with the costs of replacing the engine and trans. Could someone point me in the right direction to accomplish this? Thanks....newbee Al

Just an update. My "thunk" has gotten to the point that it occurs every time. So took it to dealer today. After riding with the tech and able to reproduce the noise, I gave him the service bulletin number.
Invoice comments are "performed JTB00395 updated TCM software and re tested. Noise is no longer present"

I drove home (1.5 hours) with several stops. NO THUNK.....YEAH

Thanks to davchr for starting the thread with the Bulletin #

I too hear this clunk sometimes in my XKR.
Just curious, how much did the dealer charge you for this? It's my understanding that TSBs are not covered for cars out of factory warranty.

Thanks

$224. including diagnosis.

Rkur 06-17-2020 06:11 AM

2013 XK has the same issue. I will be calling my local dealership. Thanks for this information.

mjsammon 06-17-2020 08:49 AM

My 2012 XKR does it intermittently. Does anyone know if this causes damage? If not I'll save the $224 for something else.

old_dawg 06-18-2020 05:43 AM

I have no idea if it would cause damage and I failed to ask the tech. I work under the theory that if something is getting worse or more frequent then it eventually is going to cause a problem. If it just intermittent and not getting worse I wouldn't be too worried, but mine got to the point that it happened every time I shifted into park.

The Clunk is a different issue. This thread is about the "clonk".

Talking

TSB JTB00395NAS1 for my 2013 XK

Had the ' clonk' in Park issue addressed per the TSB at the local JLR dealership. I asked the Service Writer to first see if it was already updated and to proceed if not. They did the work...
So far it seems to have cleared up the noise.( $240.00)
l talked to a number different Service departments to find out if it would create a problem if NOT performed...and the responses were all essentially the same, " no, not an absolute necessity, will not do any damage".
One advisor said it allows a " friendlier communication between the TCM and the PCM".
