Undertray pad replacement
I had a "significient" oil leak last year (2010 XKR) , and only recently got around to some further investigation as to where all the oil went. Besides leaking out of the undertray pan, upon removal of the plastic undertray I found the liner pad saturated with oil. I removed the pad as it was held down by some gussets, and called my local jag dealer. Of course there is no listing for a simple pad replacement. Only the entire undertray is listed available --for $1132! So, I cleaned up the undertray and reinstalled it without the pad.
My question then is, does this pad have some other function than catching a few drops of oil on occasion? Do I even need it? I'm considering finding some other source of a similar material and sort of making my own replacement, but am thinking that it is just a convenience and not an essential component, Anyone ever replace the pan or even look at this pad? |
Pretty sure my ‘07 XK doesn’t have a pad on the undertray. Guess it doesn’t have a problem with incontinence. :D

Anyone ever replace the pan or even look at this pad? Just an FYI if you're looking to source a replacement, a neighbor of mine has an Ford F150 with a funky catch can that left oil on his floor after an oil change @ jiffylube. They gave him some oil absorption pads to lay on his floor. I'm guessing they'd sell you a few and you could fasten them to the under tray in the same fashion as the OEM. You can get them on Amazon: Hope the leak is fixed. |
Be very careful with fire risk.
Make sure you use a material that wont ignite, if it touches the exhaust in the case of an accident. You also dont want anything that will absorb water and hold on to it. |

My opinion, it's there to do what yours did and that's keep the oil off the ground. It's possible that it serves some slight sound barrier function but I doubt it.
