Can anyone tell me What is the decibel (db) reading of a standard xkr 2006-2010 exhaust is and is there a download sheet.

thanks jagtoes, saw this video before noise is something else. My car is in for it's roadworthy test, and the db reading can't be above 99db's here in Ireland at 3/4 revs. Used my phone app and it reads 101, was looking for some printed evidence in case the tester fails me. He only tests the noise if he deems it over the top. It would be great if the standard levels are over the 99db.

 

An observation per my perspective is the Ferrari HOWLS while the Jaguar GROWLS. Having owned a V8 Ferrari and attending a few Ferrari Challenge Cup races the noise is like a hive of hornets. I also think a lot of this is because of the high rev motors. The Jag is more of a mussel car growl which I also enjoy. The thing that I didn't like about my Ferrari was at 70mph in 5th you were at 3500 rpm and the noise after a 1 hour drive would hurt your ears. The XKR even with the top down is pretty quiet unless you want to punch it . Enjoy the sound.

 

Car and Driver do road tests, as you know, and if you click on the DOWNLOAD SHEET for a particular car you find the DB for ..idle....wot....and cruise at 70mph.

Personally I find a 2007 XK without supercharged reads closer to 72-74 db cruising on the loop 820 around Ft Worth, Texas which is way too loud a car for 'touring' for over 12hrs at a stretch. Toooooo much ROAD NOISE. This car sucks on ROAD NOISE at 70 plus mph. NOISE tires you out after twenty plus hours of continuous driving. I bought a '14 Mercedes ML350 Bluetec to cure that. It reads only 66db at cruising speeds. MUCH better a 'touring' car/vehicle.

I did not read all the posts on your thread, so my reply isn't really what your looking for. IF I were you I'd buy a decibel meter off Amazon.com for less than 100 US bucks and have a go at it yourself.

 

I've owned both XKRs, one with the standard exhaust and the other with the performance exhaust. I personally love the performance exhaust option, it makes the car sound more exotic, giving it more of a howl than a growl. However, without the active exhaust valve closed you should have no problem passing the sound test. The sound is many times louder with the active exhaust opened, by passing the muffler.

 

passed noise test no problems, so very happy. A question on performance exhausts for any one. There is a few selling performance exhausts system. Question is , some have no valves that assist in noise, like the original. What happens to the pipes that used to be connected to the valves on the oem exhaust back box, are the blocked when not in use.

 

You would plug the tubes and remove the fuse.

 

Some after market exhaust systems remove the active exhaust muffler system and replace it with there own muffler with no switching control. If you have the standard exhaust and want the performance exhaust option which is standard on the XKR-S you can remove the 2 resonators in the mid pipe and replace it with an "X-pipe". X-pipes are available after market or you could buy the Jaguar X-pipe. With the X-pipe and the active exhaust values opened the sound is addictive. The best thing with this set up is that you can have it both ways. Picture attached of performance exhaust "x-pipe".

 

Is the performance back box also different to the standard XKR? I've read a couple of times now that just replacing the centre section and secondary cats with an X-Pipe actually seems to make the exhaust more refined on the XKR/XFR; slightly louder with a different tone, but stops the pops/bangs on the over run, this is the opposite of what I'd expect to happen?!

I'm weighing up options for a new exhaust on my XKR at the minute, I was thinking about just doing the X-Pipe, but I wouldn't bother if it meant loosing the popping etc as I think that's part of the fun.

I might have to go for a Spires 'Active' stage 3 system if I can't find a full performance system for a decent price.

 

I get many more pops, cracks, bangs, \%&!@()$"'|#!%$ with the performance exhaust(PE) than the standard exhaust. The PE is louder and the sound is more like a supercar sound than a truck--the pops and cracks come more frequent. On acceleration the sound is also more frequent producing a more exotic sound.
