When to change transmission oil?

I've read a few threads about changing the gearbox/transmission oil.

i had a price prom Jaguar and it's over £600! 😱

I realise its whats hats called a ZF kit and the sump is changed with integrated filter and it's not a quick job. Still seems excessive but not a job I'd do as a diy'er.

The question is, do I really need to do it as jaguar leads us to believe it's not required but I read people advise after 8 years or around 80k?

Mine has done only a low 21k miles but it's now 10 years old being a 2008. I like to do preventative maintenance to keep things in tip top working order but am I waiting my money?

What are people's views?

General consensus is to change the fluid around the 60k mile mark, or a time-wise equivalent of maybe eight years.
I bought a case of the correct fluid and a pan-filter and the mechatronic sleeve on Amazon for like a total of $180, and then I paid an indie European Specialist another $200 to do the work. The fluid that came out was a bit darker than it should have been.

The manuals and some people say that it takes about 7 quarts to change, but mine took 9-1/2 if I remember right.

A couple of thoughts. ZF made an error when they declared and warranted their transmissions "sealed for life". It wasn't Jaguar making that call, it was ZF. In 2012 they saw the error of their ways and made the following recommendation in 2013:

ZF automatic transmissions are filled with specially developed semi-synthetic oils.
At very high operating temperatures, the oil ages faster than under normal conditions. Examples:
 Many trips at high speeds.
 Many trips with a trailer in tow.
 Sporty driving.
Depending on the driving style, ZF therefore recommends a transmission oil change every 80000 to 120000 km, or after 8 years at the latest.

So there you have it. They changed their recommendation once transmissions began to fail I would assume. That said, like any maintenance schedule, the risk is yours as is your own peace of mind. I would change it.

Not sure what shops are near you, but these transmissions are used in BMW, Hyundai, Audi etc. They are common and you might want to price at an independent transmission shop to get a better price.

Thanks guys, a bit clearer picture now. It is going into an indie in a couple of weeks for a service but they didn't seem to want to do it or give me a price for some reason so as you say, might be worth asking a transmission shop.
With the mileage being so low, it's prob not desperate at the moment.

For people who have gone with jaguar's recommendation, what's the impact or symptoms of not changing it? Premature wear or not being able to select gears?

On my X100 purchased in 2004 with 72k miles I did all the research on tranny fluid/filter changes prior to purchase.

At that time ZF recommended initial at 80k miles and 50k miles thereafter, albeit on a different box.

Had it done at 82k 130k and 180k, immediately I noticed (or didn't!) more seamless gear changes and a better feel when changing gears manually..esp no jerkiness when reverse was selected.

Would imagine more noticeable on higher mileage cars that cover the nation (UK) average.

Would imagine it's just as noticeable with the X150 and will be getting mine done by Bristol Transmissions next year.

I've done the drain and fill procedure on my 05 Super V8 and the 07 XK. The 05 had a transmission squawk that went away after the change, so improvement there.

The XK had no symptoms before or since. I just followed the recommended service after purchasing the car. The fluid was clean on the XK. There were no metal bits in the filter, which is as expected. I don't recall the SV8 fluid.

Thanks for the input guys!

I have asked this question many times, but have never gotten a straight answer. Has there ever been a case of transmission failure on the X150?

I read various stages to do it at 30K or 50K. I paid under $600 the two times I have done this service. First time was at 40K, the 2nd was around 20K as the pan was cracked (plastic) and starting to weep.

Failure; who knows.... but reduced performance is quite common. Hard to notice until AFTER the service is done because it happens so slowly.

At 59,XXX My jaguar was not shifting quietly in a very specific situation. Go to DS, lift off far in advance for rail road tracks, once cross tracks, shift back to D. The shift back to D would be harsh.

Changed the transmission fluid and I am now two years and about 14,000 miles later and not seen issue since.
