Default Why is my car hissing at me?

I had the radio, A/C and the seat cooling on (hey it is Florida). Anyway I started hearing a hissing noise kind of like radio static coming from behind me. I turned everything off and it continued for awhile. I'm thinking it was caused by the seat cooling. Anybody know what the heck it is?

Had you consumed any meatloaf or chili prior to the event?

Sounds like it might be the seat cooling, though I'd describe it more as a fan whirr than a hiss. You can definitely hear the fan when you turn on seat heating or cooling.

Default Seat Cooling

Are the front seats actually cooled by refrigerant or just use a cooling fan? The manual on my 2012 XK doesn't really say. Have not had a chance to use them.

Thanks.

The air is actually cooled. From the 5.0 workshop manual:

The climate modules contain Peltier cells, which heat up or cool down depending on the voltage provided by the climate seat control module. Each climate module also contains a blower, controlled by the climate seat control module, which blows air over the Peltier cell and into a liner in the related cushion or backrest. The heated or cooled air then flows out of holes in the liner, and through the seat pad and seat cover.

All cats hiss when you don't rub them right. The more they hiss the harder you need to rub them.

I can testify they actually cool. This is a great option for Florida!

I've read in an article about the XKR some time ago saying the luxury seats actually have real cooling on the seats and not just air. In southern climates the cooling would be most useful. They work great. Unfortunately, the performance seats don't have cooling.

As my post above says, they use a widget called a Peltier cell - same sort of thing used in those tiny one-can fridges and some of the 12v car fridges. Can be used for both heating & cooling.
