Default Will the real Slim Shady please stand up?

I noticed there are TWO XKR 175's on eBays that both claim to be the first of 175 XKR-175s produced.

Which is the real one?!

Nothing in either eBay ad states that these cars are Production car #1 in a series of 175 built.

The ads simply say these are 1 of 175 built. This does not mean #1 in production.

I emailed and spoke with Jaguar USA directly about production numbers and was told they DO NOT put a production number on their cars. I own a rare 2009 Jaguar XKR Portfolio Edition Convertible were only 200 were produced. Jaguar could not tell me from my VIN what production number my car was, they don't retain that data. So, I have 1 or 200 produced. Not #1.

In this case as seen on eBay these cars are just 1 of 175 built. Jaguar has no way to tell from VIN numbers if the cars that are produced are #1, #5, #25 or #175 etc.

So I would have to say, none of these sellers are to be considered "shady".

It's just the way the reader interprets the advertising. Nothing more. I see nothing "deceptive" about the ads.

My understanding was that the last five digits in the VIN indicates production sequence, however as each model year does not start at 00001, there is no way to tell if the specific car is the first in production, or not. Based on the two VIN's, it would appear that the second one came off the production line before the first one.

This is true. That rep that stated they don't keep track of production numbers simply did not know where to look or did not want to look.

The example at Chandler, AZ looks like they didn't even bother to clean it first.

Unless jaguar is different from all other auto manufactures there is a Vin # which is identified as the 1st car mfg'ed and the last car mfg'ed for each year. It may not be identified as vin # 1 but they know the production number from the vin#. Most cars are built during the prior year that they are sold.

See this thread ....

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...number-110245/

If you can determine the production number of your car, please let us know.

Good info in this thread. I always wondered about production numbers.

Yeah, that whole "1 of 175" thing caused a shedload of confusion. Interestingly, the XKR 75 has no similar 'numbering' issue - there isn't even an indication that there are only 75 of them.

My VIN ends in '032' - I asked Jaguar about it when I was researching my 75 article, but no-one was able to confirm if mine was no. 32 of 75, or whether the VINs were irrelevant.

"One of 175 made" would have been less ambiguous I think.

The Jaguar VIN decode which is more reliable than OnLine lookups. Note that Jaguar refer to the last 6 digits as the 'Production Serial Number':

The Model Year commencing VIN:

Agreed.....for a Mercedes Benz dealer, they certainly DO NOT represent this 2011 Jaguar XKR 175 very well. Interior floormats, trunk area looks dirty and engine bay dusty.

In addition, it is very doubtful they it will sell for the $76,999 considering what our other forum member (Schwabe) just paid for his 2012 XKR-S in Italian Racing Red with 6600 miles on it.

It will be interesting to see how long this one sits on the lot, ........or will it go to auction?

GGG:

My 2009 XKR Portfolio Edition Convertible is 1 of 200 built and imported into the USA.

My last 6 digits is B29402......so am I to assume I have #29 in production?

Do I have #94 in production?

Do I have #40 in production?

Do I have #02 in production?

I can't get anyone to acknowledge a "real" production number from the last
6 digits of my VIN.

Perhaps you can shed some light.

I essentially posted the same info in this thread:

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...number-110245/

I am sure so many Jaguar owners of these limited edition cars would like to know what their respective production run number is.

Jaguar tells me, in email and by phone they do not track which VIN is tied to a specific production run number.

Richard,

Jaguar claim all XK's are built to order (not for stock) and the numbers going down the production line are sequential.

UK manufacturers have traditionally been very reluctant to put actual Completion Dates on vehicles. This only happens in markets where they are forced to do so. Australian specification vehicles have a plate with the Completion Date on which it came off the production line. US vehicles have a sticker which, as far as can be determined from several posts across the forum on this topic, is the Import Date.

For 2009 MY, the first vehicle produced was B27987 and the last was B32752. A total of 4765 units.

What can be certain is the 2009 XKR Portfolio Edition Convertible will not have been built in a continuous batch of 200 vehicles. You will probably have seen photos and videos of the XK line. Coupe followed by convertible; normally aspirated followed by supercharged; all colour and trim options. This has to be determined by the sequence in which orders are received.

For the 2009 XKR Portfolio Edition Convertible, one with a number prior to your 29402 will have been completed before it and a higher number will have been produced later. It is extremely unlikely that a batch of 200 B29xxx numbers was reserved for the series and allocated as required. This could make subsequent parts ordering by dealerships very difficult as many parts specifications change at a specific VIN.

Presumably it was Jaguar North America who told you they do not track which VIN is tied to a specific production run number? This is a reasonable response as they have nothing to do with vehicle production. I'm sure Jaguar Cars at Castle Bromwich in England will have records of exactly which car went down the line and when but may not choose to disclose this information.

The 'limited edition' is generally targeted at the US market. For example, my last 2005 XK8 was a Final Series 4.2 'S'. This was marketed in the US as the 'Victory Edition' and limited to 1000 vehicles but elsewhere in the World, the 'S' was available with no limit on numbers.

If I was the buyer of a 'Victory Edition' XK8/XKR or an 'XKR Portfolio Edition Convertible', I would want some proof that only the advertised number actually had been produced so I can easily see why you are interested in this!

Did you make a fairly easy going request for the information from Jaguar North America or a formal request under Freedom of Information?

Graham

My understanding is the same as GGG's - they get numbered as they come off the line, and Jag doesn't make a continuous run of any special-edition model. They're mixed in with the rest of the production schedule.

Graham:

You are 100% CORRECT. My car was produced at Castle Bromwich in England. Yes, the info came from Jaguar USA. My request was in email form, then Jaguar USA/NA actually called me and confirmed the info of NOT KNOWING the production number.

I know my car is rare, and really makes no difference what production number it was, but it is just the curiousity of possibly knowing.

Your info here helps me understand the process of production.

Interesting, according to the serial nr. my 12 xk vert is a portfolio edition although there is no mention of it on the window label or anywhere else. I think I will check it out further.

Default VIN Numbers...

Hi all - new to the forum, because i've always owned Porsches, but have just purchased my first Jag - and its the 2011 XKR-175. Saw this thread - and if i'm right (and this just seems too impossible).. the two car you found for sale on EBay back in January each had a VIN number:

SAJWA4FC1BMB41255
SAJWA4FC4BMB41430

Those two VIN numbers are exactly 175 apart. Is it possible that the 255 is the first one, and the 430 is the LAST? My car has a B413xx number, which would put it right in the middle. Hmm.....

This is all good to know, by looking at my Vin my car is extremely rare and is the only one built.

alavelle, Congratulations on your purchase of the 175. I got hooked on the XKR with my first purchase of the 175. In comparison to the my current ride with the dynamic pack and performance exhaust, may I suggest for a low cost mod you consider an exhaust X pipe. If you replace your 2 mid exhaust resonators with a X pipe you'll have the performance exhaust and the sound is sooo much better.

Unlikely - I don't think they stopped the normal production run to crank out the 175s. Like any other XK, the individual 175 units were built when ordered by the dealers (which, I guess, could potentially mean there were less than 175 built if too few were ordered).

Interestingly, though the 75 was announced in June 2010 and the 175 was announced August 2010, my car has a B420xx VIN, meaning it was built later than those 175s (shipped 29 Sep 2010).
