So update on our roof, dealer did not want to help, we took the car to a convertible roof specialist who said he would try a repair but said he had tried a few with no success and his repair could last 6 months or a week. It lasted 3 weeks. So ordered new roof from him $2000 fitted with lifetime warranty on glass failure. I will post pics when the new roof is fitted. I will never own another convertible again!

About 2 years ago my rear window in my 07 XK dropped down. The bottom was all that held it in place. At the time I had the car up north and lived near the Manheim Auctions. I took it to a convertible top repair shop and they resealed the window with a black adhesive. I was parked next to Mustangs, Chryslers, Corvettes etc all with the same type of rear window installation process and all were getting the same treatment. The tech said all of the cars with that type window have the same problem. He fixed my car for $45 and told me no warranty, but it should hold for a year or so. Well the crux of this story is, the window is now separating again. I stopped by a local shop (Vero Beach, FL) and the guy told me he wouldn't reseal because they never hold. However a new top from GAHH would be $1700 and with the new window installation process would have a lifetime replacement warranty if the window ever separated. But, I'll see if my local Jag dealer will honor the TSB and repair it the cheap way.

I better sell this vert before I start having the same problem...
Any chance a new top would get cheaper as the cars get older? Seems like parts prices drop dramatically as a model gets older... |

Mine is going in tomorrow for an EKG and Stress test, then a few xrays and maybe even an MRI. I want to make sure mine doesn't fall apart. My Jaguar dealer stated they are willing to submit a claim with Blue Cross Blue Shield. |
Well, I'll just say this. Since there is nothing I can do to prevent it, having to suddenly pay for a $4000 replacement top would piss me off like no other.
I guess the good news is my car is never in direct sunlight unless it is actually being driven. Hopefully this reduces the chance of the top falling apart! I could always just trade for a coupe. :p |

I talked to the service rep (Treasure Coast Jag) yesterday about the TSB and he is well aware of it. He said this problem began with the '07 model and they have had reasonable luck with the repair. The biggest challenge is cleaning the arera that needs repair to ensure the adhesive will stick. Will schedule in next week and try to band aid it til I decide on a new top. Their new top is about $2700. I'd rather take a trip to Europe.

I bought a 2008 vert from hilton head bmw. After I bought it but before I picked it up they noticed the window was seperating. They took it to the shop they use and were told it can't be repaired. They put on a new top at no cost to me. If this one fails I intend to try 3M 5200. It is a flexible, long lasting, waterproof marine adhesive.

How's the car? Is it what you expected? I sure liked the color combo. Did you go with the blue top on the new one? |
They don't make my color top anymore, said top is on backorder which means can show up between 3 weeks and 7 months. When asked about new top having a better sealing system their answer can't say. Anyways $2500 to swap it out with a new one.

Hi Richard, I love the car. I'm not driving it much because the roads are still salty. There are some minor swirls in the paint so I am doing the clay paint correction. I didn't get the bue top. They put on a black one. When it was ordered I didn't realize blue was an option. The car really is in like new condition. Even the engine compartment is spotless. I think the dealer that washed it caused the swirling. It's not bad. From now on "do not wash" tape will be employed.

The clay bar will do wonders and consider the Pinnacle Black Label Paint Coating as a DIY project. It is great. Or, the Pinnacle Black Label Synergy Wax. Both expensive, but you also have a $100,000 car when new. I did my own Jaguar, Porsche, and Ford F-150 XLT with the Pinnacle Black Diamond products, which are worth very penny spent. Enjoy the ride. Keep in touch on the forums. |
Out of curiosity, when they replace the top, they don't replace the headliner, right?
|
I don't know. I saw it for the first time after it was completed. It looks new but so does everything else. I will ask.

Hi Guys,
Well the rest of the story. The bottom of my window released completely so yesterday I ordered a new top from a local convertible top purveyor for $1800 delivered and installed. Its from GAHH and has the life time warranty for the window. Should have it in about 10 days. Hope we don't get any heavy storms here on the Treasure Coast. Cheers to all. I would have rather spent the bucks elsewhere. |
I contacted the dealer and he is checking.
|
I wonder how the GAHH top compares to the OEM top in appearance and quality. I don't see a top option for the GAHH on their website--I only see it for the 2006 and prior models!
I just checked my top's window--it doesn't seem to be separating anywhere. At least not based on what I can see on the exterior. Whew! |

I contacted two dealers
The first , Wilde in Sarasota, originally stated they just would just replace the top for $3700+ . When I asked about the TSB they said they knew about it ( although they did not list that as an option originally) but that no car has come in that met the 350mm limitation. As I knew my car had a 6-8 inch separation, I went out only to discover the window was almost completely detached. It was just holding on at the very bottom I was assuming that the bouncing action when driving was partly the cause, not sitting under a cover The second dealer I called said they didnt do those types of repairs and gave me teh number of two repair shops. He recommended googling 'Auto Interiors' I called one of his recommendations and they also stated they just replace the top ( the other was quite a ways away) I eventually found a repair shop , on google, and just picked it up. 300 + tax , he ran a stitch around the window , holding the fabric together and re-glued it. It looks great, I'm just hoping it holds up. ( he was also no warranty) He also said, in Florida, its a very common problem Sorry, I didnt see the request about pictures until after I dropped it off Mine started as a small hole or separation in the upper left corner and was pretty stable for a while , I noticed it when it was about 4-5 inches long and it was pretty stable for a while. When I looked last, the window was almost completely unglued, along the top and down both sides Thanks John |
