Windshield and headlamp washer system
Folks,
Does anyone have the mechanical/fluid diagram of the washing system? Mine has decided to not flow to the passenger side and only dribble at the drivers side. Headlamp washing is fine. Yes, I've checked the obvious for kinks and stoppages, but I can't seem to locate the issue... are there two pumps down there?? Thanks. |

Here's the component location diagram:
Attachment 64901 (click on the image to enlarge it) This is the control diagram: Attachment 64902 (click on the image to enlarge it) The headlamp and screen wash have separate pumps (items 10 and 11). As your headlamp wash is OK, the screen pump is suspect. Here's the removal procedure: Attachment 64903 (click on the image to enlarge it) If the pump is OK, it could be blocked screen jets. On previous models, the screen jet duckbills block restricting the flow to a trickle. The technique to clear them is to disconnect the pipe at the pump end and blow it clear with the type of aerosol compressed air can used for cleaning PC keyboards. I haven't yet had reason to examine my XK screen jets but have no reason to think they won't respond to similar treatment. Graham |

Updating the thread with my own findings so far in case it helps others.
I disconnected the hose from the pump up to the 3-way connection that carries fluid to each washer jet and was able to blow air freely through the hose. When pressing the washer button in the car and the hose disconnected from the pump, no fluid came out although the pump could be heard running as it should. The pump locates into the hole in the tank using a combined seal and filter - short rubber tube open at the top end for the pump inlet to go into and perforated at the bottom end. Suspect either this is blocked or the pump impeller has separated from the shaft. I've got a new seal/filter tube and will syphon the contents of the tank and remove the pump and existing seal and filter tube for inspection at the weekend. |
So ya know, every fourth press washes the lights;

I know - the problem isn't the headlamp wash, that works as expected, the issue is the windscreen wash which doesn't work at all.

Oh, duh me; I missed the "Headlight washing is fine".
Ignore my ignorance. |
Haha, no worries :) You did give me an idea though, I could maybe, as a stop-gap solution, swap the outlet hoses between the headlamp and screen wash pumps over, so I'd lose headlamp washing but at least once in every four times the windscreen wash function would work... ;)

Updating again, I syphoned out the contents of the tank into a bucket at the weekend, saw a good few blobs of black slime come out with the fluid so something must have been gathering in the tank. Sure enough on removing the pump I found the filter tube to be caked in the same black slime. I drained the rest of the fluid, changed the filter tube, reinstalled the pump, added a little fluid and connected my clear hose used for syphoning to the pump and put the open end into the bucket and tried the washers - bingo, fluid coming through no problem.
Of course I couldn't be out of the woods just yet, I connected everything back up and tried the washers again and now I get fluid from the driver's side jet, but not the one on the passenger side. Suspect there's something blocking the last section of hose from where it splits in two to go to each wiper arm, or in the passenger side jet itself. On the washer jets on the wiper arms, the main outlets appear to have a slot-head screw - anyone know what this is for, is that for adjusting the flow/pressure on that jet? |

Thanks for that. Where exactly was it disconnected from - the end where the wiper is located or the end where the main hose from the tank splits in two?

Mines into dealer on Friday as both headlamp and windscreen was her pumps failed simultaneously. Glad it’s under warranty. |
I don't think the headlamp washers have ever been on for me. although we hardly use the windshield washer either as the car is usually pretty clean.
Why would anyone want windshield washer fluid on plastic lens headlamps anyway? |
In the UK it's a legal requirement to have a washing system on Xenon headlamps.
