X150 Coupe GPS antenna replacement (red line thru the gps)

My navigation has lost its way and the pointer has me positioned in the sea. After some researching on the forum I found the possible culprit was the gps antenna.

Having just completed the job, I thought it would be useful to list the order with pictures should anyone want to tackle the job.

Open the tailgate and remove the trim to expose the underside.

Using a 10mm deep socket remove the nut on the left side holding the tailgate spoiler in place.

Using a 10mm socket remove the two bolts holding the AM/FM amplifier to allow access to the nut on the right side.

Using a 10mm socket remove the 3 plastic nuts holding the reversing lamp in place. Disconnect the cable from the lamp to allow access to the left spoiler clip, which must be compressed to allow release.

Clip in compressed position.

Remove the spoiler lamp cluster by prising off the 2 screw covers to reveal the T20 screws.

Remove the 3 torx screws allowing the spoiler to be lifted up from the left side to reveal the 2 bolts holding the gps antenna in position.

It then a simple task of unbolting the unit, threading through the wire and connecting up the blue plug.

I should say that I went into the hidden menu which confirmed that there were no satellites being received by the unit which led me to the conclusion that it was the antenna at fault.
The system is now working normally :)

Yep, I've seen threads where them sunaguns get all corroded and nasty because weather 'n such. Mine is nice and pretty, because very little rain (and inside garage mostly)

Such a stupid place they mounted it!

Agreed,^^^

I haven't had any issues with mine but just wondering if there is enough clearance to throw a couple of washers in there to raise the antenna up above the recessed area that potentially holds water? To keep from happening again in the future or for anyone who may want to do it for preventative reasons. Just a thought...

One thing I discovered being a detailing fanatic.
When I blow the car off after washing, there is a ton of water I force out from under the spoiler. And it does take some effort.
Regardless of the electronics getting damaged with constant standing water, you will also get calcium, soap-scum and dirt buildup. (as seen in pic above)

The benefit of using a high power blower after washing is that it gets water and dirt out from other crevices too.

Q&C are you using something like a Metro-Vac Commander as a dryer/blower?

No all that is silly stuff. I use an inexpensive 12amp Worx blower, dont ask me how many blowers I have gone through to get there, including other Worx blowers.

Silly because yet another thing to litter the garage and have to pull out. And very limited in use. Whereas a blower handy is always needed.

Toro is also good. Or any 12 amp lightweight high velocity.

Ha Ha, I did the same until the darned thing started throwing sparks. Now I just use a gas powered blower..... uses about two tanks of fuel per year and much easier to handle with no cord. Gotta wear hearing protection when using it though!

Electric has much better ability to concentrate the air since you are not impeding the combustion cycle.
This is what gets under that spoiler clean.
But the upside of gas is you will end up with shoulders of steel.

Just what I need to tone-up the flab! lol

Thanks Stuart for your fast reply........I contacted my Jag dealer and bought the part this morning only to plug it in and nothing changed !!
The Jag parts manager believes there is another GPS antenna somewhere in the dashboard area - did you do any research or know of where that may be ?........this is now becoming a mystery.......appreciate any pointers. Regards, Alastair

Hi Alastair. There s only one GPS antenna and it connects to your Navigation DVD drive.
There is a VICS Beacon antenna upfront for navigation but that is only on cars in Japan.

Stuart xk 10-02-2021 10:43 AM

Not sure about the other antenna are you sure it's not the nav unit itself? I had to replace mine when I first got the car as the laser was gone in the unit. I took a chance and bought a second hand XF unit from eBay and removed the complete laser and carriage from the case and fitted it to the XK case and it bingo it worked apart from the antenna still being faulty. There are more XF units available hence price difference.

Now Sean is on the case your in good hands :icon_wink:
