Too much time wasted. I'd buy it in a sec unless the $5,000 is an issue. What do you think this car would sell for if it went through a wholesale car auction? Don't even think about it. I wouldn't .

He is effectively asking what happens to a 5.0 engine past 200,000 miles. He had already decided to buy it.
You may be able to shed some light on the mechanical effects of 250k on what I would assume is mostly hwy miles.
I kinda wanna know too.

My guess is that these do 300k with just replacement of chain.

Eventually this for the X150: "At Jaguar Classic something very special is on the horizon. In today’s increasingly environment‑conscious age, we will soon be offering electric powertrain conversions that preserve the looks, handling and performance of original E‑types – yet deliver zero tailpipe emissions."

Wow, that's quite fantastic! Did you see all of the XJ220s lined up?

At the risk of repeating what everyone's already said (and in case the OP is still deliberating), I'll add my 2c.

Having bought used cars in the past, I've found that the greatest influence over a vehicle's future reliability and costs is whether the vehicle has been properly cared for. "Deferred maintenance" (i.e. not fixing things that are broken) is the killer of cars much more than age or mileage. The accumulation of such items means that when the next thing breaks, it is more likely to be a prohibitive cascade of items that need to be fixed rather than addressing the one required repair.

If this vehicle has truly been serviced by the dealership and any discovered issues have been addressed, then you might find this car has a lot of life left in it. Yes - things like tranny internals, etc are going to be a crap shoot - but they could be at 100K miles too, depending on how the car was driven and serviced. Furthermore, your stated use will not add many miles, which means it may serve you well for a very longtime.

So - my 2c (to pile on everyone else's) is that if the $5K is not a big issue, buy the car and love it. If it lasts one year, you'll have spent less in that year than the cost of depreciation for a newer model. If it lasts longer - bonus. If less, oh well - it will not bankrupt you, and is still worth lots in parts. I don't see a downside.

And life is far far too short not to treat yourself once in a while.

On the other hand, neither friend knows what the future holds. If the car broke down the day after purchase, would that strain the friendship? If so, I would not risk a friendship over a car.

Hey Murray,

If I accept your invitation and have to travel from Atlanta to Vancouver to drive to the steakhouse in your Jag, there better be a whole lot more in it for me than a piece of dead meat!

I'm in for the steak dinner, and raise you a glass of good scotch.

That, plus an escape from the summer heat of Atlanta - and maybe I'm getting closer?

I'd think it's already been done, if that many miles and it didn't already explode. It would be good to verify though.
