XK Convertible Recall

Hey Guys,

I just got a recall letter from Jaguar Canada saying they need to replace the roof open switch so that windows come down as a pull instead of a push (Some Transport Regulation). I called the dealership today and they said it is a pretty major amount of work with the headliner needing to be removed, etc. They said it will take a full day.

Now I'm not sure if I want to rush into this. The service dept says they have not done one before... Do I want to be the guinea pig with my 6 month's new car??

Anyone else in the same boat?

do you have a recall number?

CleverName 10-08-2013 01:50 PM

Got excited for ya all for a minute there!
Now if they would only address the major problem of delaminating rear glass! Yeash!

Recall number: 2013-268

I can see the reason for this regulation in window buttons on the door that you might accidently bump into, but the convertible top control switch is in the center of the header, which is pretty out of the way.

Especially if you ride with small children, I would say do it in the interest of utmost safety, but the risk seems pretty remote.

Here is some additional information. I personally would leave well enough alone. Why take the whole headliner apart and break the factory seal unless you have to? This is how squeaks and rattles become more pronounced over time.

Also, I want the job of whoever was paid to tinker an nit pick until they found something like this that was somehow justified enough for the government to take action haha.

it should be a straight forward fix. They are removing the overhead console, which pops right out and replacing it with a new switchpack.

I thought so too at first until they told me they need to remove the whole headliner and it would take the whole day... I would hate to introduce new problems trying to fix such a minor issue.

Thanks for the info. I have to get my 2012 XKR-S convertible for the maintenance before winter storage. I guess they will have that info and I should skip that one. I don't want to be the dummy on that one ... I agree with you guys, that could be the beginning of other problems.

I had the item in question replaced yesterday. I arrived at my dealer (Hornburg Santa Monica, CA) at 1pm. They replaced the roof top console in slightly more than 30 minutes and I was out of there at 1:45pm. The part number is C2P25445PVJ. Top works fine, the only issue is getting used to the new control. Now we are seeing our government(s) waste more money from all concerned even with a "shut down"!!

I got mine in the mail and it says the work should only take 30 minutes. If that is true, it does sound like just an overhead console replacement as JonnyJag mentioned.

In fact it mentioned further down in the letter:

"If you have already paid for the roof overhead console to be replaced for this concern prior to the date of this letter, Jaguar is offering a refund."

My letter says this is for Recall Action J030.

EDIT: Just saw Ralph's reply, good news it doesn't actually take all day.

Wait a minute, this isn't just a Canadian repair?

ralphwg 10-08-2013 06:55 PM

No, it is a U.S. repair as well.

I'm curious, what is the change in functionality? Currently I push the one button to close the roof and keep it pressed to close the windows. Has that changed to a 2 step process? Thanks.

Its so that when you're closing the top you have to stick your finger "under" the switch and "pull" so that in the event that you slip at the exact .10 second that the top is hitting the windshield your finger won't get jammed. Big brother thinks that theoretically if you're "pushing" the button that if you slip it could cause your hand to "push" up and get closed in. In this event you would chop your hand off and blood would squirt everywhere so they decided to "fix" the switch as an alternative to replacing the wipers with something more robust so you could drive to the hospital. Totally dumb recall since the car is an auto and you can drive it with one hand IMHO.

It is still a one-step process, push to open top and windows. Pull to close top and windows. If you pull with the top up it will open the windows, not sure about the back windows, because I didn't look the first time I used it because I wanted to put the top down anyway. Will check it out later today.

Still a one step but different single step motions for opening/closing.
