XK/XF touch screen interchangeability

Hi, I have a thread going in the XF section related to touch screen emergency OS (basically a screen full of computer programming code) and am wondering if anyone has experience of replacing an XK touch screen with a used screen from an XF of same year. They look the same but due to higher availability of XF used parts, the XF screen costs about 20% of an XK used screen. Link to original thread is below and I appreciate any advice on how to resolve at reasonable cost. Thanks!

A qualified yes. Your 08 is interchangeable with certain versions from the XF. As part of an experiment we did some time ago, 8X2310E889AC, 8X2310E889AD were used by me with software provided by Cambo (see other thread). Other newer head units might work but I can't say for certain beyond those two. I might have tried it on an AF version too, just don't recall.

BUT, it is not plug and play. You would still require an XK software load following a process like the one in the TSB in the other thread (but with XK software) because the heating and seat heater controls won't work.

So it is not plug and play but it's doable.

Also you may see the 2010 - 2014 XK head units going for less that the 07-09. Same logic applies to those. You would need to load the 08 software. The 07 XK head unit is the same as yours and will work without updates, but cost will prolly be the same. Any mods you have like ACM, satellite, should show up once the XK software is loaded as those add mods are not stored in the head unit.

It is also worth noting that if it is just the screen, backlight or touchscreen sub-assembly that has failed, the screen and electronics sub-assembly is available on eBay new. The assembly is Toshiba LTA070D010F. They are available for about $100.

It is all plug and play, but there are a lot of screws to remove, and you should be familiar with how to plug and unplug flat flex cables without damaging them similar to those on a laptop computer. I repaired mine and it has been solid for a year now. No programming or soldering needed for this sub-assembly repair. Here is an example listing: https://www.ebay.com/itm/LTA070D010F...8AAOSw~gRV5Tym

That being said, I am not sure if this is applicable to your specific problem.

Thanks for all the feedback and advice, which hopefully gives me a few operations to work with

Hi, does anyone know whether an infotainment screen from a 2006/2007 XKR with part # C2P16234 / 6W83-10E899 AB is compatible with my 2008 car which has part # C2P16234E / 6W83-10E889AHE ? Thanks!

yes it's compatible, assuming your 08 is an X150 also. I don't know anything about XF's which you mention at the start of this thread.

Thanks, I do indeed have a 2008 XKR (X150). The reference to XF was because someone with an XF was experiencing the same “PALMYRA EMERGENCY OS” fault as my XK.

Yep, thx. You note the 08 XK earlier in the thread but then you just said 08 in the last post. Just didn't want to assume.

There are a number of threads that cover this subject but having read them I was no closer to a solution and so I thought I’d write about my experiences. I have a 2007 XK convertible which I have owned since 2015 and love the car but losing the Touch Screen Display (TSD) is one of the most frustrating things of the 4 year ownership. I realize that the problem I had has been discussed in a number of threads. The screen goes out after a number of minutes, can come back on after an ignition restart, goes off quicker at higher brightness, setting at 50% brightness seems to extend life but after a period of time you need to reduce the brightness to get longer periods of life out of the display. I thought I’d give folks some info of my journey to try and solve the issue. I have electronics experience and symptoms suggested a failure of the backlight circuit (Touch screen still worked and could be seen with a bright LED light), or a heating problem, as the display does get hot and there is a thread that suggested that Jaguar put out a note to install a fan behind the unit. I have found no such document and local Jag dealer has no clue about this. Before I continue I need to let you know that I had a new AGM battery in 2017, many suggest that the electronic issues are caused by battery issues, with no change in TSD behavior. (I could not find a circuit diagram for the TSD and therefore didn’t want to troubleshoot it myself).

I decided to replace the screen and found a guy in the UK on EBAY who has a number of new units, manufactured around the same time as my original one. The supplier was LJCMotors and I had many conversations with Lee, the owner, who was extremely helpful and insisted the units were new which I was skeptical of until I received the unit. Screen protector was still attached, the fiber-optic plug protector was in place too. This was a new unit. So the question to answer now was how to safely remove the old screen. For this there is a YouTube video on how to do this by a company called Hi-Tech Electronic Services in Van Nuys, CA, who repair many makes of car electronics. Removing the wood bezel was easier than I had anticipated but be patient with this. Here is the YouTube video:

And here is their website:

More on these guys later.

I installed the new unit and all was good for about 30 minutes and then I had the same behavior as my original unit. LJC Motors was prepared to send me another unit at no charge and then return my unit later. I suggested that I would keep the unit while I sent Hi-Tech my old one for repair. Beijan at Hi-Tech is a very knowledgeable person and tries to be as helpful as possible. So then things started to get stranger. On a long journey I set the new display at almost no brightness and low contrast. Drove for 2 hours and could still see a faint image at the end of the journey, then on the way back I increased the brightness another step and I had no problems, screen stayed on. I then increased again and again then increased contrast step by step. It has now been running for 4 weeks at full brightness without going out. This is perplexing because it’s July/August/September and 90 deg temps are not uncommon and driving with the top down doesn’t seem to do anything to create a heating problem. (BTW this screen problem previously happened at all times of the year). I have not replaced the bezel trim yet and wonder if that helps heat to escape the console. An experiment I will try later.

I then got a call from Hi-Tech that said they had found nothing wrong with the original display but did change the board in the unit. I have that display back now but I’m not sure what to do. Do I change the display back to my own unit and risk a problem or do I leave well alone and wait to see how to progress from here. Any advice would be great because maybe, just maybe, this problem is not in the display unit itself but a blank screen and the touch screen still working would suggest that’s where the problem is. If anyone has any suggestions on their experiences please respond.

Lee, at LJCMotors, suggested the light sensor as a potential problem but my head lights, dash lights all come on at night and in poor light as you would expect. LJCMotors can be contacted at lee.ljcmotors@googlemail.com.

Repair costs are $350 - $650 depending on the cause, mine was $550. The new unit was 489 pounds ($586 in todays dollars)

Looks like I got the same error on my 08 xkr. I went and did an update with sdd , took about two hours and everything appeared to be back to normal, but next day same issue again. Will try to USB method. Where do I get the software that's needed to reload the head unit?

Horshamrich 09-21-2019 02:20 AM

Hi, sorry to hear the fault came back. I know how frustrating this is as I tried different (unsuccessful) things over a 6 month period and really fell out of love with the car.

Not sure where to get hold of the software but perhaps Cambo can point you in the right direction. You’ll need to pull the screen out of the dash to do the usb reload, so I suggest taking it right out so you can check the part number in case you end up replacing it. This is a simple 30 minute job that involves unclipping dash trim, removing 6 screws to release the unit from the dash and a further 6 screws to get the screen out of its frame, then unplug 3 electrical connectors. Search on YouTube and you’ll find a video showing you how to do this.

Lee Clarke is an independent JLR specialist (based in UK) selling brand new units on eBay for a fair price and may accept an offer (plus all the ongoing Brexit madness has devalued the GBP so there’s probably no better time to buy :icon_cry:).

Good luck!

Ps. My car is fully working again and I’m loving it!

So maybe third time was the charm. I decided to reconfigure the module with SDD one more time. The only thing that I did different was pushing the ignition off as soon as it promted me to at the end of a 2 hr download vs before it took me like a minute or two to get to the garage as soon as my security cam pointed at the jlr screen notified me of motion detection,( my method so I don't sit in front of the screen for two hours)
So far so good 2 days.. will see, if it goes to error mode USB method will be next

2010 XKR touchscreen change

But for the info I have seen on this forum I would not have attempted this work. My XK screen had the flash 4 times then died, but you could still see it dimly with a light. It was however unresponsive so took me back to my Ford Anglia days!

Hopefully you can read the relevant serial Numbers. The replacement has the cradle.

Plug and play

2 small, T20 at the top followed by 4, T27 screws. You will have to remove a trim clip at the top and the unit will slide out

Remove the XF unit cradle, the holes line up with the XK frame

Success.... then off? Battery voltage had fallen below 12.5V on my marginal battery.

You need one of these to work on Jags I'm afraid. Not cheap but I got it to run the cloned IDS SDD
That said it could not have been easier, and much preferable to handing over thousands of $ to a dealership. The important aspect is getting the correct XF replacement part. I got mine from eBay, Carpartmobile ($120) in Latvia; who would know. But they said it was tested, it arrived 3 weeks later and works so far? I'll probably get a spare when I go to the UK in Sept?
