XKR fuel smell in car
 

I'm helping my son try and find the source of a fuel smell in the cabin of his 2001 XKR convertible. I've read the archives and still have some questions so would appreciate any help.

I've removed the inner wheel liner and located the purge valve. How can I tell if it's working correctly.
With the ignition and engine off there is 0v at the valve and it's open, no vacuum.
With the ignition on there is 11.67v at the valve and the valve is open, no vacuum.
With the engine running there is 13.2v at the valve and the valve is closed, 18" Hg vacuum.
If I disconnect the electrical plug from the valve I still have 18" vacuum.

There is no ticking sound from the valve when the engine is running.

One of the moderators will probably move this to the correct section...you have posted in the post-2006 XKR section.

But back to your question. Have you found the two TSBs on the gas smell applicable to this car? There are quite a few design issues that can be causing this.

This is one case where you may have to perform all of the TSB items to fully eliminate the odor...this is what I had to do. It sounds like your purge valve is working, but that does not mean it is not leaking fumes. BTW, the reason you see voltage with the valve opened and closed is becuase it is operated by a pulse width modulated signal....it is not really a DC voltage you are looking at.

The purge valve TSB, requires a new valve plus some other hardware. This alone is a bit over $100 in parts, and is proabably a good place to start....but you may have to do more.

A close inspection of the vapor hoses, especially those under the car between the vapor canisters is also important.

Hi White XKR, many thanks for your reply. I've re-read all the TSBs and other information and will start with the purge valve as you suggested. I've ordered a new one and will install it later in the week and continue the quest. I have a lift so getting under the car in no problem. A cursory inspection of the CCV valve, hoses and cannisters look OK but I will proceed one step at a time.
