Default XKR trans and e-differential fluid change.

I've been searching all over but haven't seen the info. Does anyone know:
1) If the fluid can be changed?
2) If so, how much does it cost to have it done?

Yes the fluids can be changed.

Cost - depends. The Trans takes a mineral oil, if you buy genuine, you'll be paying a fair bit. There is a section on here I believe that has cross over information for different brands of trans fluid. Same thing goes for the Diff, you can change it, just make sure its synthetic.

Labor - the trans bit requires to check it according to temperature, which will require you to crawl underneath to fill and check fluid level. If you take it to the dealer, it will need to be cooled down in order to check fluid level properly. May need to drop off first thing in the morning, or leave over night. All depends on labor rate!

As i remember the ZF fluid is about $10 per quart. The filter is integral to the pan so you need a new pan as well. There are sellers on ebay that sell a kit with the fluid and pan/filter. I think it is ~$230 for an XK pan/filter + fluid. I found a local ZF service center and they took my fluid, pan/filter and charged me a$100 for labor. I have done it on XK8s before and it is a MESSY job. If you have a lift it is doable. Without a lift I would pay the $100.

David, could you please provide contact info regarding the ZF service center and your eBay source? Thanks!

I had the fluid changed on my XJ at:

Tucson Transmission
2435 W Curtis Rd
Tucson, AZ
(520) 888-2790

You probably have to leave it overnight as it needs to cool before they fill it. The place looks like a real dump but they do a lot of car and truck transmissions there and seem to know the ZF transmissions.

Here is a link to an ebay selling the filter, pan, and fluid for $230:
OEM ZF Transmission Oil Pan Filter Kit & 6-Liter's ZF Lifeguard 6 Trans Fluid | eBay

I think that is where I got my fluid and pan.

And yet no one addressed the ediff. You can drain and fill with the thing to note that it does not use the fill port as a level to achieve! This is a overfill. Iirc the wet drain and fill is 1.2litre. And i do recommend as ive seen some pretty dank fluid coming out of diffs with less that 50k miles.

Hey Brutal, I called the dealership today to inquire about getting e-diff and trans fluid changed and they said it's not something they do unless there's a problem. I'd rather not wait until there's a problem. I'm at 24K miles on my 2010 XKR. Do you advise doing this at a certain mileage or age?

After seeing some of your recent posts it appears to me you are in the maintenance panic mode. It doesn't even fall into the preventative maintenance bucket. At 24K miles you shouldn't need to do anything other then normal maintenance as described in the OM. Anything over and above is overkill in my opinion and a waste of money. Follow the recommendations and if anything out of the ordinary comes up then have it taken care of.

This is from the ZF bulletin regarding transmission service:

"Depending on driving style, ZF therefore recommends a transmission oil change every 80,000 to 120,000 km, or after 8 years at the latest"

Thanks for the psychological diagnosis but panic has nothing to do with it. Without concrete info on how the two previous owners drove and maintained the car, I'd rather be safe than sorry. (Read McJag222's post about ZF maintenance.) It's an ounce or prevention and it has enabled me to own a number of Jaguars without a single major expense.

Sadly, that US owner relies excessively on cheap Harbor Freight tools which did not help his little adventure.

Excellent, it is good to know that I don't have to pay for excessive overhead costs. I just want to have the transmission fluid changed. If they seem to know what they are doing that is all I require. $100 for a labor charge is excellent considering the need to have the engine running while filling the transmission and the need to work around the exhaust pipe.

I have a somewhat schizo question.
How do we know the guy filling the trans is as careful as he should be. And how long will it take for his mistake to showup. On the Ftype forum a car was overfilled by one gallon.

Had the differential service done today. I picked up the Castrol BOT 720 at the dealership and took it to a local indy. The labor charge was $81.00. The fluid was $96 ($48 per liter). And since the e-diff holds 1.2, I had to buy two. LOL.

Found this video from ZF on changing the fluid in a 6HP transmission. Here's the link:

Hey guys,

I doubt the transmission fluid has been changed in my XK, an '07 with 24k miles. I have some but not complete service records. Given the mixed signals from Jag and ZF--- a recommendation from ZF above at changing at 8 years max and 80-120k km, Jag says sealed for life--- what would you all do? I'm over the ZF recommended time limit but way under the miles. Is changing it now at only 24k miles (38k km) the way to go or just overkill? Thanks for your input!

You seem to love your car like we do and will most likely keep it for a while.
I would change it now that you are aware of this, and provided you find someone highly competent to do it.
If for no other reason than to have something to feel good about. 90% of the things we do in life are for feelings and not practicality- which itself becomes practicality.

I went through this too.

Oil, Oil Filter, Brake Fluid, Transmission Fluid, Transmission Filter, Diff fluid, Coolant, Fuel Filter, all changed on my 2009.
