1997 XK8 engine rebuild
Hello guys, I bought my son a 1997 XK8 convertible a while back and he moved to California. Now the car has had some issues mainly overheating and finally it quit on the way home from work. Long story short after the tow to the nearest reputable garage they said it was a blown head gasket. After taking the top of engine off they have found a sludge and recommended stopping the repair. Is there anyone in San Diego that you guys know of that would or could do a reasonable rebuild on this model. A quick Google search gave a few leads but mo one wanted to do it. Shame to junk a car with 80k miles but not worth 5k or more to swap engines. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks,
Casey

can he do the engine swap himself to save some cash?? I had to rebuild my XK8 engine due to failed timing chain tensioner at a cost of $ 4500. Depending on how much they tell you the rebuild will cost, the swap might be best bet. Other option would be to part it if you don't want to repair.

There is only one Jag competent shop that I am aware of here in San Diego.
Jaguar Coventry Cars of San Diego
I would be remiss if I didn't tell you that they have recently been belligerent with me and will not be receiving my business.
If you can't do something like swapping an engine on your own, you likely have very few choices in San Diego that would even touch the car.

I am curious - "After taking the top of engine off they have found a sludge and recommended stopping the repair." What does this mean "a sludge". Sludge as in grease, congealed oil, or is it something mechanically wrong ? It sounds a little like the place you took it doesn't want to work on it, or doesn't have the know-how. A head gasket is involved, but it's not rocket science. If it is a problem due to the cam chain tensioner issue with bent valves, that's a different story.
Anything you do involving a mechanic is going to get expensive. A lot depends on how much you value the car. Used '97 engines are avail for $1000-$1500. Rebuilt '97 engines for $2500 or so. Plus installation.
