1999 XK8 Hydraulic leak - How to close rear quarter lights?
 

only 2 ways to raise them - make sure the rams are fully extended to engage the microswitch or remove relay and jumper

The leak could be at the hoses to the rams on the other side of the pump. Looks like the hoses to the latch have been replaced.

Attached is a diagram of the linkage for the roof ram. My directions on this link is to unlock the roof rams but if you do the opposite of what it shows you can lock the rams. One thing you do not want to do is to force it in a way that will cause the roof linkage to bend. Not an easy task but it can be done in a pinch.

David - looks like the original hoses. Best to replace them with upgraded hoses from either Cabriolet Hydraulics (I used them) or Top Hydraulics (most forum members have ordered from here). Both companies offer high-quality, higher pressure rated hoses - full set for about $600. Top Hydraulics also offers rebuild services on the rams and pump if needed. Can be done as a DIY - takes about 8 hours

Hope it helps in some way but it looks like you have a different problem from normal deluge? It looks like your leak is from a pipe at the rear of the filler tank? I did not even know it had a pipe there! Good luck.

First off ... since you do not want that pump to try to work while you have a broken hose ... I would disconnect the big 2-wire electrical connector to the pump. Also be sure the petcock on the pump is open when you're going to try to manipulate the top by hand.

If you have not gotten the rear windows to go up yet ...
Is the top up and latched? Only If so ... Turn ignition key to ON. Then press and hold the roof rocker switch in the UP direction. The windows may close. If not, press the rocker in the DOWN direction for a few seconds, then again press it in the UP direction. May work; may not.

David, can you Google Jaguar TSB 501-33?

I couldn't find a copy to post, but its easy to read on line. This TSB details how to replace original fluid.

Let me continue your question since the TSB is focused on fluid and doesn't seem to say air: Forum - does one have to purge air the same way you purge old sticky fluid (disconnecting hose at header and purging)?

The system will self bleed the air out after a few operations. You just need to pay attention to the fluid level. As for your temporary repair remember that the pump puts out 1,600psi.

Well, my initial idea worked.
When I fixed the leaking connector (using a pipe crimp), I then filled the reservoir and locked the petcock. I tried the hood a few times, and it moved out of synch so I stopped - I didn't push it. Bubbles in the reservoir fluid were a sign of air locked in the system. I didn't try it again as the motorised pump got really hot and battery died!

I drove the car a bit and the motion must have dislodged the air, and/or charged the battery up, as I when I tried the hood button again, the hood went smoothly up along with the rear quarter glass. Success.... for now, but I know my fix is only temporary and the new hoses are on the way.

At least the car cabin is closed now to stop Ginger, my next door neighbours cat ! Rain isn't a problem as it hardly rains in Bahrain, plus if someone steals a car in Bahrain, the criminal penalty is that they might get their hands cut off. That's justice!
