2001 xkr driveshaft bangs on tunnel under hard accell
Greetings all,
Felt general vibration and sometimes a rapid banging inside the 2001 xkr under hard accelleration. Removed the two piece driveshaft and could see where the center carrier bearing was hitting the driveshaft tunnel.
found nothing worn on the driveshaft except for the front flex coupling, but noticed that the sliding joint does not slide.
Does anyone know how this joint can be disassembled for service?
My useless JTIS manual shows a "one piece" driveshaft without a sliding joint.
Thank you,
ToronadoMike

On some other cars this would be diagnosted as a possible broken differential mount. Each time you accelerate the front of the differential would hit the bottom of the floor pan due to the broken differential mount. You might check it out. Even though this is the 2006 and newer XK forum and not dedicated to the 2001 models.

Don't seem to be able to navigate very well around this website, didn't see any threads on a 2001 XKR with driveshaft vibration problems. The 2001 XKr has ridgidley mounted differential, hence if the drive shaft does not shorten lengthwise, any slight movement of the rubber mounted engine rearward forces the drive shaft to whip at the center rubber mounted carrier bearing. Went to the local Jag Dealer who was kind enough to show me a disassembled driveshaft with the sliding yoke taken apart. I was then able to understand how to secure the drive shaft in a vertical bench vice and appropriately apply force using a lead hammer without damaging anything. Got the splined yoke apart, and soaked the male spline in Muriatic Acid for an hour to clean the rust off. re-assembled the yoke with Mercruiser spline grease for corrosion protection. Now that the freely moving center yoke allows the drive shaft to accomodate normal shifting of the driveline, this eliminated the severe vibrations that could be felt under hard acceleration. Even though servicing these drive shafts is not rocket science, Jaguar Service publications does not show that this is a two piece drive shaft with a center carrier bearing. But they are nice enough to offer a complete drive shaft assembly for $2100 bucks, not including dealer installation.
