2002 XK8 Third brake light

Hey y'all...I've read a lot of posts on the third brake light or high mount stop lamp and am inquiring if anyone has a lead on a replacement for my feline. I've checked e bay,Jag bits,Covenrty West and Gaudinjaguar...to name a few. I removed the trim cover off the lens to try and replace the peanut bulbs but found the previous owner must have had the same problem because I have an LED strip and he/she super glued and epoxied the heck out of it so can't exacto blade it apart without breaking the lens. I verified the LED strip is inop using a different battery and have 12+ volts at the trunk or boot wire so definitely have a faulty LED. Anyway...anyone have one "laying around" ( yeah right right? LOL) or knows of a used working replacement. Thanks and Happy Safe motoring to you all from sunny Florida. Tony.

Not to question your diagnosis but the most common failure for this light is a broken wire in the wire loom bend at the deck lid hinge.

Thank you for the advice Test Point...I checked the voltage of the two naked wires sticking out of the trunk lip under the third brake light...the previous owner must have cut off the quick disconnect wire box and had used electrical tape to reconnect :(...and got a solid 12+ volts when the brakes were applied....so I have good conductivity to the brake light..thanks for the heads up tho. Tony.

I tested mine also when it went out, and it measured good with the trunk lid in the up position. It still turned out to be a broken wire though. I gues it made contact wiht the lid open and was open with the lid closed.

Brian...really??....closed when open and open when closed??...lol....sorry...couldn't resist ;) but seriously...I checked my voltage with the trunk or boot open and closed....got a solid 12 volts...thus eliminating the broken wire theory..me thinks. I hooked the LED strip directly to a good battery and no lights, wouldn't that also confirm they are inop or is there some LED nuance I'm not aware of? Thanks for helping trouble shoot my feline bro's. Tony.

had same problem with number plate light on when up off when down..broken wire in harness..rewered myself at no cost..common fault

Try reversing polarity when you test it. This is a led light and you said the connector was cut out of the loop?

Tri_motorman 10-06-2012 11:22 AM

Hey Brian...thanks again for the advice. I had already switched the polarities of the LED wires to the test battery but to no avail.:(
So...I'm looking at $210.00 for a replacement light but was asking if anyone knew of a 2002 XK8 convertible that was ( sadly ) being parted out? Thanks...Tony.

Now had time to change leds. As I quessed new ones will be bit different color I made folloing.
I removed both LED the most left, the most right and one burned. Replaced one burned with removed one - and one I have as a spare.
Then soldered new leds to the left and right.

On the home table eye cant see difference in color, but in camera photos its visible.

After install and dark night also the eye can seen that new ones are RED, as the other ones from 1997 are bit red/orange.
