Default 98 xk8 99 xkr swap

My name is Chad I live in SanDiego.I have a98 xk8 my dad has a 04 xkr.We bought a99 xkr engine and trans with the engine management harness that bolts to the fiewall. The harness was to differant for me to modify. So we used the zf24hp trans.and the xk8 engine management harness thinking that because the tranny has its own computer that it would work.I have since put the engine in and connected everything oil cooler, intercooler pump minus the wirering to the pump.I know the relay goes to em13-10.The engine is in failsafe mode and i am geting all the CAN codes. I have voltage and get 60 Oms from the OBD plug. I know i have to add the number 2 fuel pump but am trying to get the CAN issue worked out first.I see the xkr trans only has 2 CAN wires and the zf has 4. All the CAN wires seem to be the same on both engines. If anyone has an idea I would appreciate some feed back

WOW! This is going to be a good one!

To summarize:

You have a '99 AJ26 XKR engine installed in a '98 XK8 body

You have a '98 XK8 ZF 5HP24 transmission bolted to the engine

You are using the '98 engine/transmission wiring harness and I assume, the '98 ECM

Did I get that right?

The first thing I see is that the ECM and engine do not match. Someone else is going to have to jump in with details but while the '98 XK8 and the '99 XKR both used the AJ26 engine there several differences in the sensor and electrical setup.

My guess would be that if if you got all the wiring 100% correct, the internal messages between the ECU and the 5HP24 controller will not be compatible. Additionally, the 5HP24 probably will not hold up to the power of the supercharged engine. I think you should get the original Mercedes transmission and tranny controller used on the XKR. Even then you may still have a few challenges left, but you will be a lot closer.

Default 1998 xk8/1999xjr

I have a 1998 xk8 convertible and have installed a 1999 xjr engine. I have both transmisions, but selected the trans and engine management harness from the xk8, because the wiring was too different (fusesbox locations, etc.). I am using the xjr ecm # lnc1410ca , the engine won't start, and I get these eight codes: P 1643, 1646, 1637, 1638, 1642, 0405, 1474, 1112. I had tried the xk8 ecm; the engine would always start, but ran only 3 seconds then died with the vvt codes. We know the zf5hp24 trans may be weak, but there is a new hub/drum available that replaces the older unit that was the cause of most failures. We would like to put xjr mercedes trans, and would if we could find a 1998 or 1999 xkr engine managemment harness, but we've been looking for two months with no luck. We did find one, but it turned out to be 9/1999,, so it was considered a 2000, thus it would only work with a aj/27 engine and ecm.
Any help would be deeply appreciated...Chad/Billy

White XKR

We have the xjr tranny and controller and are willing to install them; what additional problems do you anticipate?

To have a successful install you will need to fit,

1. R engine, harness and ecu
2. R box, harness and tcu
3. Dash loom, speedo cluster and BCM.
4. Link lead to fuel tank and dual pumps

Then the R drivetrain will think it's in an R - no shortcuts or it will keep serving up CAN codes.

I recall a big restoration company attempted something similar, and ended up fitting even the door actuators and locking mechanisms because the BCM would not let the car start!

To be honest it shouldn't matter if it's an AJ26/27 unit, but all listed modules need to be from the same year and preferably for the engine you are using, so lay your hands on the rest of the '99 stuff.

It's work, but not impossible - maybe should have asked what was required on here before starting the job.

Just to add - I can help with finding the parts, and they won't be expensive. The UK has a number of guys I can put you in touch with.

Sean, we have an xjr harness and ecu, which doesn't plug in to the car under the dash; and, engine bay areas are different. We think we need a 1999 xkr, is that correct? Do we also need a 1999 xkr ecu. (We bought a 2000 engine management harness, actually a 9/99, but it takes a different ecu.)

We assume by R Box, you mean the Mercedes trans for xkr; yes, we have that, but of course, it's really from the xjr. The tcu Semans unit # is LNF 2403 AD. We have the R box harness from the xjr engine management harness.

WE don't have the xkr dash loom, speedo cluster and BMC. Ours is only the ones that came with our 1998 xk8. Is the BCM a blue box located behind the glove box (blue--2x4x6") Numbered x100.

We don't have the link lead to fuel tanks or dual pumps. Thanks, Billy/chad

Default xk8/xjr engine swap

Took a break from the jag, rebuilding trans on our 64 nova ls6 engine swap. Now have taken 99 xjr sc engine back out of 1998 xk8, and am re-installing Mercedes trans, and am ready to purchase engine looms as needed.

We have '99 xjr engine loom, and xjr transmission harness, and xjr enginge management harness, we also have same for xj8

We also have engine management harness for 2000 xkr (but it's really 9/99) it won't work because the ecm is different

We need duel pump gas tank wiring

We need engine management harness for xkr, we think it sould be for 99xkr left hand drive

We have xjr computer ecm LNC1410CA and trans computer LNF2403AD

help

billy/ chad dumb and dumber...

Thats one big can of worms.... Good luck to you, Sean has said basically everything you will need, in essence you need to take everything from the R and put it in the 8, if you are going that mad, dump the auto put in a T56 with a stand alone to run the engine, I think it would be less grief and probably cheaper.

Kinda of similar when someone put a 4.2 with the 6 speed box into a 98 XKR, they had to fit the entire loom as well, pointless IMO to do it that way, there is also the Polish guy on the forum who fitted the Supercharger to his XK8, he had to fit a smaller crank pulley to tone down the boost because he still had the high compression pistons, I beleive he got it running but not very well because he could not program the ECU correctly, not sure if he finally managed to do it?

hi. I have a 97 xk8. The rear driving lights are having issues. I put in the rear lights from a 2005 the new style. Rewired them with white xkr,s help. Got everything working then passenger side stopped. Just the driving lights everything else worked. I connected the drivers side to the passenger side. Worked again. Then rear light out flashes up in the dash. Driving lights not working again.so I figure I need to ground rack light which I do. Nothing. So I pig tail power from side marker lights. All working.dash light stays on, but goes out. The next night no side marker lights or driving lights. Any ideas.

I am not able to help you with your lighting problem, but I think you will have more support if you start a new thread with the title "Rear light problem". This thread is about an engine swap.
