Default 98 xk8 blows airbag fuse

Hello everyone. This site is a grate gift for a guy like me.

I bought a 1998 xk8 convertible 4.0 that was standing somewhere under a tree for few years at list, I am having alota fun giving it a new life. Fuel pump changed, clutch drum A changed, which i think was the reason why it was parked in a first place, new paint, fluids change engine clean up, tiers changed thou they looked bran new the flat spots on them made it impossible to drive smoothly.

Now I had to change expansion valve so i took the whole dash board apart and changed it, put it all back together again, that fixed the a/c but now i get airbag light on, also when i put key in ignition i get beeps from litle climate monitor above stereo with Er sign on it. In about 30 seconds i get this anoying beeps like 5 sets of 5 beeps and it stops beeping but airbag light stays on. Beeps come from airbag module i can even feel it when i put my hand on it. Car starts and drives fine.

My friends say it must be somthing wrong with wiers, may be pinched.
Does anyone know if there is anything but the pinched wiers that could cause that? Cause i looked thru wiers agan and agan they just seem fine.
Computer sais no comunication to the airbag module and as soon as i put a fuse in that f 4 spot on a drivers side dash board fuse port it blows.

Can i please can some suggestions on what should i look for next??

Thanks a lot in advance

Tim,

I've moved your question from Jaguar Forums Advice / Feedback & Suggestion Center section to XK8/XKR section. The Advice / Feedback section is only for posts about the forum and not for technical questions.

Members here with the same model as you have will be able to help.

Graham

The SRS (airbag) ECU contains an electronic solid state switch that is activated by the computer as a failsafe to intentionally blow the fuse and disarm the system if it detects a fault that it deems serious enough to potentially cause spurious airbag deployment.

There is a warning in the service instructions NOT to replace the fuse until a full diagnostic of the system can be performed.

For safety sake, you should not replace the fuse. You do not want to chance the airbag firing off while you drive.

Short of taking the car to a shop for diagnostics, your best bet would be a good used airbag module with the same part number.

Question xk8 airbag module

Can anyone tell me if i need to have it reprogrammed or reset somehow. Becouse i know that my battery was disconnected when i took it all apart. Now i can go ahead and buy another airbag module like that from e-bay, but it seems that if it happend to my module just for diconnecting it, then the same goes for all of them?

Default airbag warning flashing 5-2

I got some help on figuring out my airbag problem. I have plugged airbag diagnostic into hvac control under the steering wheel those two plugs fit like they are meant for each other, that caused shorting out and beeping from my airbag module. Well now that it s corrected i get 5 sets of 5-2 flashes from my airbag warning light. Can someone tell what that means?

The circuit for your car does not show a buckle switch for the passenger side.

A little more digging and the 5-2 code may apply to a low battery voltage or loss of completely.

So, please check your battery is fully charged. Then disconnect the seat modules under both seats and check and clean the connectors then refit.

Then try again.

If this doesn't work then you may to bite the bullet and get it checked diagnostically.

Hope this helps.

Thank you again Jim, I was looking for some info and found that on some fords flash 52 may mean loss of back up power supply for airbag system, Well it says Ford right there on my airbag module. Is it possible that my back up power supply is down? and if yes then where is it? how do i replace it? I wonder if it is located inside my airbag module and i just need to replace that whole thing? My airbag fuse has been blowing due to shorting, that problem is now resolved, but could it have caused damage to my back up power supply, wherever it is?

Hi Tim,
I can find no mention of a back up supply to the SRS on your model.
Look to your own battery first before you spend any money on modules.

From JTIS for your MY:

If a fault creates a risk of spurious airbag/SRS deployment, the ECU will attempt to remove deployment power by rupturing the 10A battery fuse via a solid state switch. To aid fault diagnosis, the ECU will not rupture the fuse again until the fault is rectified and cleared. The 10A battery fuse must not be renewed until the airbag/SRS system has been de-activated. The fuse (F4) is located in the fuse-box at the driver's end of the fascia.

Are you certain the fault has been rectified?

Well the fault was that when i put dash board back together i stuck hvac control fiting ,that goes into tiny little motor just above my right knee, i stuck it into the airbag module interrigation port or fitting, they match realy good, tho i still feel dumb. Now i disconnected it and airbag module is not beeping anymore, that explained shorting and fuse blowing, that also explained beeps and sign Er from little climate control monitor above stereo. My battery is new and i take that thing around the block almost every day battery power gauge shows good measures. Now if i am not mistaking on one of the diagrams of airbag module i saw this little square that sais ,deployment power energy reserve, i really dont know what it is, but just a question could that be a back up power ? or it somthing els?

Sorry Tim, I didn't see that.

That may well be the back up supply and if so I would say your options are, to have it checked by a dealer or replace the module.
