Drive Shaft Saga Update w/Pics
The warranty company is really testing us over this drive shaft issue, it's been going on for weeks: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...g-sound-60533/ and https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...veshaft-62157/ , but there's still hope for a happy ending.
We did as they asked this week, removing the drive shaft beginning early Monday morning, and notifying them at 11am that it was out and ready for inspection by the claims adjuster. We told the company there was no damage to see, that the noise was coming from the rear of the shaft near the U joint, and was in a sealed part of the shaft meaning we were not going to take it apart.
After some back and forth that went nowhere over the next couple of days about what was going to transpire, the claims adjuster showed up on Thursday, and of course he agreed there wasn't much to see. Pretty large waste of time, IMO. He, like us, couldn't understand why the company didn't call him out as soon as we duplicated the noise on the lift and had notified them two weeks earlier.
Here is the slipjoint pulled out, looking a little dry of grease, perhaps a little burnished, etc. Tight though, no play.
Close up of slipjoint, no unusal wear that anyone could see.
Sealed rear area from which the constant knocking and intermittent buzzing sounds came from during engine run-up on lift. Does anyone know what is in there that would make those kinds of noises? Could not find an exploded view of this area anywhere.
So now the plan is to take it to a driveshaft rebuild shop Monday morning, put it on the balancer and run it up to about 2,000 RPM and record the knocking sounds on my digital camera which is awesome at recording sounds. Then we'll slow it down to about 1800 RPM to simulate the kind of throttle movement that always induces the buzzing and record that.
This will help convince the warranty company that the problem is in the shaft, and not somewhere else that is transmitting the sounds to the shaft.
Anyway, more to follow next week. If anyone has any insight into this please share it with us!
