AJ26 SC Engine No - How to actually see it

Hello all,

ordering parts for my recently acquired 1998 XKR, I needed to know the engine number. Since I didn't know wether the engine might have been replaced in the past, I really wanted to see the number on the block.

I did find some explanation here and elsewhere where the number is located, but had some difficulty to actually find it.

So here's how to go (at least that's valid for S/C engines, N/A engine owners might have to remove a cover).

- it helps to be in a rather dark environment (garage, or in the evening)
- stand on the right side of the car, best is to use fender covers
- have a pencil-style little torch with a pointed beam at hand
- look inside the cavity shown in the attached picture

From this point to view, you will see the engine number upside down.
If there's too much dirt, the area is easy to clean: use a piece of paper towel, wrap it around the blade of a mid-sized screwdriver and fix it with tape. Apply some fuel or carb cleaner and insert the screwdriver horizontally from the front of the engine (right beside the drivebelt) into the cavity and clean it.

The engine Number is actually a date/time code, eg "980617 1430"

Stefan
