Alternative steering wheel for X100

Hi,

I'm thinking of changing the steering wheel of my Xkr 2000 year model. The stock leather/wood wheel is not of my taste and I would like to change to a full leather steering wheel, also a bit less diameter and thicker grip. Of course I might loose the air bag, but an almost twenty year old air bag is maybe not likely to fire when needed anyway. Anyone that has changed to a non-OEM steering wheel and can share your experiences?

Regards,
Higgins

Higgins, I'd be more concerned about losing the buttons on the wheel. As I type thought pops in: won't you have a perpetual airbag error light? It sure does light if not connected.

BTW you pretty much described an XJS steering wheel.

you can put a bit of black tape over the airbag warning light :D

Higgins 09-12-2018 01:52 PM

Yes I guess there might be issues with warning lights. When it comes to buttons on the steering wheel, I use none. The audio unit in my car is changed to a modern one and related buttons at steering wheel not in use. The phone buttons I never use.

Would a Xjs steering wheel fit the steering column?

Higgins

Gosh I'm not sure . The xj6 and XJS are same mount size in case you can use that.

Some of the later model XKRs have all-leather steering wheels. I might eventually change mine, too, as I consider the wood-leather combo wheel a bit too flashy for my taste. I also find my hands wanting to be on the upper wood section, which is too slippery and tends to make my hands sweaty. I tried wearing string-back driving gloves but that makes the wood part even slipperier. I realize that that option won't change the thickness nor the diameter but will at least fit although buttons might not all work properly unless you carry them over from the stock wheel. I realize you don't care about the buttons but some might.

The all leather wheels from the X308 (98 - 03) model are a direct fit so you can use your existing airbag.

here is an example from a 1998

Shame the X300 one doesn't fit (AFAIK) Always liked the gold growler on mine.

Guess the safety gnomes decided embossed leather is less of a risk.

Yeah somebody probably got a cat face imprinted on their forehead at some point. :icon_doh:

That was a good one Rothwell!

Well it turns out there is hope for those XK8 owners who want an authentic growler on their airbag.

Seems that the X308 in VDP trim had them with wood wheel.

The XJR 98-03 also had them but with full leather wheel.

Found these two on ebay.

The 2002 XKR 100 has a Momo wheel that sounds like what you want. It is quite nice and has the "R" embossed in the center. I love it!

I replaced my steering wheel with an all leather version and I love it. It is the same diameter, but slightly thicker than the original. I believe it was from an X100, but it might have been from an X308. The airbag, audio controls and cruise control buttons all fit perfectly. Whole job took about an hour. The hardest part was disconnecting the airbag connector.

I replaced the all leather steering wheel on my '06 Victory Edition with a wooden one(Like wood??). The leather wheel in taupe has several scratches on the leather from storage, but is is overall 'Good' condition. If anyone can use it, I will sell it for $25 + Shiping..
PM me for pix.

You're in luck, mine is an old new stock steering wheel from an XJ. I got it from Welsh enterprises for $200, good price if you ask me. Buttons are the same, still has indentations for fingers, and my mechanic and I agreed the feel is much better.

edit: I got it here, https://www.welshent.com/Jaguar-Stee...OS-P11678.aspx, was only 2 or 3 months ago, maybe give them a call.

Hey Guys!
I recently bought Sam's Steering Wheel. It was on his 2006 Victory Edition. I'm going to have it recovered using the same color (Taupe), which is the same color as my Dash and Trim along the Windows. So it matches and looks much better than the "Woody" that came on the Coupe originally. I made contact with Dallas Custom Steering Wheel...www.dallascustomsteeringwheel.com

This is their quote:

- Wheel $349 (solid tan leather) or $429 (two-tone, including combined perforated and solid tan leathers).
- Adding thumb rests $100 (bumps at 10 and 2 o'clock for sporty look).
- Extra padding $75 (if prefer slightly thicker than stock for comfort feel).
- Adding a stripe $30 x 3 = $90 (any colored band at 12 o'clock).
- Colored/Style stitching (no extra charge).
- Shipping $30 (ConUS) or $80 (International).
Turn around time about 4-5 days. It may take longer when done with matching perforated leather, because we have to send out the solid leather for perforation.

I've looked at a couple other places but this one looks pretty good...Look at their Website, as it shows a bunch of Wheels they've covered.

I was thinking of having a White 1/2" stripe at 12 O'clock and possibly 3 stripes at 6 O'clock in the "R" Performance colors: BRG/White/Red, which each could be anywhere from 1/2" to 3/4" each, which would look pretty good and give the Wheel some color....

Looks like a pretty good way to throw another $500.00 or so Bucks at the Jag....What do you Guys think?

Sounds good. Look forward to seeing the final results.

Steven300,
Do you have any suggestions as to where I should keep on looking?
