Am I done??
Here is a list of the work I have done to my 1998 XK8 in the last week or so.
1. Replace cam tensioners & Gaskets 2. Oil & Filter 3. Plugs, air filter & fuel filter 4. Flush top system and install a pressure valve. 5. remove old seat covers, repad seats, install new covers 6. Replace both lower ball joints 7. Replace rear view mirror (auto lights still work!!!) 8. Replace thermostat, Temp sender & water pump 9 replace trunk light switch 10 checked brakes= ok, Belt= OK. pullies= OK, hoses=OK I have the trans service, flush power steering & brake system scheduled in a couple weeks as I am hoping to drive the car for a week or two before having to once again take it apart. Is there anything else I should be considering? |
Opening a XK dedicated garage and doing everyone elses cars on here?

Good start though. Add check/flush differential lubricant to the list according to your preference. Presumably the coolant is fresh due to the cooling system work. |

My friends said I should have bought a KIA. They have one and haven't had to do anything except gas & oil changes.
Maybe they were right? NAAAAAAAA!! I would be dead from boredom and embarrassment . :icon_dance-twist: |
Do you have the metal thermostat housing?
My once housing blew, and the previous owner replaced it with another plastic housing. I've got to address it and inspect the water pump for a plastic impeller. |
I have all the normal faults repaired in my Jag.
The only thing I have NOT done on my 1999 XJ8 is the 'A'drum in the ZF 5HP24 gearbox. I have a spare trans with the 'trans-parts-tech' reman drum all ready to install when the original (already at 100k miles) fails. Just the last part in the repair list. bob gauff |

Don't forget the rear Zerk (grease) fittings on the universal joints on the half shafts. |
Good job. You seem to have done all the major elements. I'll be tthe ABS unit will fail sometime, but tha tis an easy fix. Enjoy your car!

Zerk fittings
Yes, they're back there. The best way to access them is to lift the rear of the vehicle to have the rear wheels "free wheeling", in neutral, and slowly rotating the shafts because the fittings are opposite of each other on each end of the shafts. The fittings may be covered by a plastic cap, covering the zerk fitting (which may indicate never being greased unless one was diligent in replacing the caps). I have to give credit to a thread I ran across ("grease fitting"), where, it appears, a number of members were unaware of the fittings and it was not highlighted as a normal maintenance item.

Let us know how your trans service goes. I've got 100K on my '98 XK8 and planning to get mine checked out in the near future. I'm in Monmouth county NJ and not sure where I should go to get it done, other then the dealer$$$$$$. Jack

I only change the pan oil and filter the first time. In 3 months I drain only the fluid. then in 3 more months the fluid & filter again. (I do this if the fluid looks really tired and appears to not have been changed in a while.) After the second filter change, I service every 30K. This gives the trans time to adapt to the clean fluid and not just freak out because the pressure has changed due to the clean thinner fluid. |
