Another Tire Kicker
 

Hope you don't mind but would like to pick everyone's brain a little. I'm going to be looking at a 2000 XKR with a little over 70,000 miles this Saturday and wanted to know what to look for and what to ask. The current owner has had the car for about 9 years. Appears to be well maintained and at least with this owner has been put away every winter. They also said that they had the water pump replaced. Asked about the cam chain tensioner but they did not know. I've read the different things in the forum as a non member and looked elsewhere to determine if this car would be something for me. As of this time I'm definitely thinking it is. I also don't want to get into a money pit or my wife is going to say "I told you so"...
Need help from the experts!

A 2000 XKR with 70,000 miles will probably be needing Tensioners soon anyway....Make it your plan to replace them soon, along with your Belts and it's a good deal that the current owner replaced the water Pump! Send Photos, if you buy it!

For your convertible, I would check the roof mechanism too and history on whether the hoses have been changed. The age of the car means the original thin hydraulic hoses are well past their sell by date. You’re buying a convertible so the roof should work!

A brief summary in what to check is
1. Car history is very important. It’ll tell you whether the known car weaknesses have been addressed. Any concerns post them here for specific advice what to look for - weak battery problems, chain tensioners, engine cooling, electrical systems, front suspension
2. Car is best suited to garage enthusiasts as it’ll need TLC. It’s old now but can be a reliable daily driver if maintained. I got mine as a non runner and worked on it, and it’s been a daily driver now for over a year.
3. Have a fat wallet especially if you pay a garage to do the work
4. Parts are readily available with suppliers known to forum members. Some prices will make you check twice though esp. on trim pieces. Lots of Ford generic parts fit too. There’s a sticky thread of members cross compatibility finds.

If you buy this car, it’s a fun, powerful V8, beautiful car. A real head turner - which as BCP said - it’s like a beautiful blonde. Do one thing for her, it’ll want something else.

Wow! I think you jinxed me. I did buy the a beautiful black XKR Convertible yesterday. Brought it home and today went to put the top down and I started having hydraulic fluid pouring from the front headliner...
Guess I have my first project!
