Another "what are these" question

On the 4.2L engine, what are the electrical "items" that are on near the fronts of both valve covers? I will take a picture once the car returns home. Anyways the one on the right side is leaking a small amount oil, is it just a matter of removing it and resealing or what?

Thanks again.

Probably a vvt seal #AJ82856. Pretty common leak and easily obtainable. The seal just pries out from the cover and can be replaced in a few minutes.

Looks like this, right?

You are probably referring to the Variable Valve Timing (VVT) solenoid O-ring seals. They sit there and bake in the engine bay heat, get brittle over time and heat cycles, and then start to seep both oil and air while sometimes throwing P0171 and P0174 OBDII codes. On my wife's 2006 XK8, they tend to last perhaps two to three years at most. Easy to remove and easy to install, just be sure to wipe the area squeaky-clean of all leaked oil residue or you will be dealing with more seepage very soon after the installation of your new ones....

These O-ring seals range quite a bit in price depending upon where you source them. I last ordered them from rockauto.com (January 2019) for just under $15 for the pair. The part number is AJ82856. A current 5% discount code from rockauto.com (valid through May 31st) is MMAP198. Enter the code in the "How did you hear about us?" box when you place your order....

I responded to this yesterday, but for some reason it did not post.....

Anyways yes the VVT seals are what I am asking about; did not know these were Variable Valve Timing solenoids....but now I do. Have not read anything about these in the past....guess they do not fail often......

Will be ordering a set from RockAuto as they have the best price on them...plus I need to get some other parts as well.

Thanks for the info.
